4 .308 rilfes shot this week.

Hello 4 friends went to the range this week. We took 4 diff .308 rifles.
1. M1A
2. FAL
3. Armalite AR10
4. HK91
All were shot with iron sights out to 200 yards from a sand bag rest.
Not a single rifle shot better then the next. We each took turns on one rifle then moved to the next in line. All seemed to have good groups.. the Ar10 had double feed problems.
The HK destroyed the brass. The M1A seems to like 168g bullets. The FAL was able to cycle any ammo we fed to it. With minor adjustment to the gas block. Realy the only problem we had was with the AR10. Hope it was a bad batch of mags.

Sounds like a good time. Can't wait till the snow is gone and able to enjoy the range a bit more. Just got another 6 inches again last night.

I am looking for a good .308 and the ones that you listed are the four that I can't decided what one I want. Sounds like they all have their quirks. I guess it will just boil down to best price. I have friends that say just buy an AK-47 WASR 10. We will see.

Aks are cheap. Remember that. Out of the three the FAL seems to be the best(in my opinion) they all are going to run around $1000. Best advise I can give is try to shoot them all if posible befor u make the choice

All nice rifles. Which would you say you liked the best out of them? I sure like the FAL my cousin has with it's pristine wood stock. I have heard that the dsa fals are incredible as well but they are spendy. I need to get to the range also. I have been off work for a month because of major knee surgery and have been passing the time tinkering on my rifles. I have installed a new scope and swapped 2 others, made several other changes to stocks, aftermarket action parts, etc. I also reloaded some ammo for my .30-06. Now I need to function test 3 rifles and sight in the scopes. Need to wait until a buddy can go with me so I don't hold up the firing line during target changes waddling out there with crutches, lol.

If youre wanting a good .308 win semi auto rifle then don't settle for an AK in 7.62x39. The accuracy won't come close, and the long range capabilities don't even compare. These types of rifles arent in the same class. Nothing wrong with Ak's I had one for years and it was a really fun plinker. But they are not long range accurate rifles. A good FAL, M1, Ar10, etc. are and they are in a class above the AK. Just keep that in mind so you are not disapointed if you buy an AK.

Well said.!! They are in a class above the Ak! I personly like the FAL best. I think the HK91 is a close 2nd. But I don't like how far forward the chargeing handle is. All are nice rifles so it comes down to what you like!

Hope ur knee heals up. Don't rush it. I have had knee problems in the past and rush to get back in the mix... take it from me don't rush it.. DSA does make a nice FAL. I think u could buy a parts kit and then send it to a builder and be in great shape and spend less money!!!!

1300 is not bad for a new M1A, I haven't seen used any cheaper.

If they were all base models that sounds about right. The doubles on the AR10 could be magazine related or you could have a build up of brass at the extractor. It could be a older model with the first design extractor. Check with ArmaLite, they offer a upgrade to the original owners. Are the mags 1st gen or 2nd gen? There are a lot of counterfeit Gen I mags on the market. Built using the cheap Korean M14 mags and counterfeit ArmaLite kits, these can be problematic. Genuine ArmaLite Gen I mags well be made from USGI M14 bodies and have the ArmaLite roll marked floor plate.

My AR10 shoots just a touch better than my NM M1A, maintains accuracy with 147/150gr surplus and has much less recoil then the M1A's. I'm going to thin my M1A herd and add more AR10's.

$1300 for new M1A is a great deal, however, a slightly used one can be had for just less than a grand. I know this because I've picked up two, a Scout and a Standard, in the past 2 years. In fact, one was here in the classifieds. Very nice rifle.

At this point I am differing with MadCrate. My experience with an AR10 was a bit disapointing. The one my buddy was allowing a test drive could not keep a mag in the well and really was all over the paper. Yea, that was 10 years ago and they may make them a whole lot better now. I just rejuvenated my passion for the M1A after that experience. Maybe not fair just using one rifle to go by.

The FALs I had years ago were really cool. Solid reliable, heavy built just not all that accurate for me. My two were a heavy barrell with wood furniture and a standard with plastic. At the time, we were dancing coke cans at 200 with Super Match M1As and whooped out the FALs for a change of pace. The heavy would hit a bit better than the standard but both tended to be noise with no dance. Kept'em for a couple years and let them go.

The M1A can and should be optimized for accurate fire. My current rifles are not bedded and can clean a 1.5-2 inch group every trip to the range with decent ammo at 100 yards even with my tired eyes. My only regret is not pursuing the accuracy tips I've learned recently on rifles I went thru years ago. On an M1A Standard you really need to clock the gas lock and shim the gas cylinder to trap the front band. Really easy to do both with a $15 shim kit. Huge improvement from that tweak. Also, a standard can use some clearancing of the stock so none of the barrel and gas cylinder touches the wood. Also a cheap fix. Good thing is if you want more accuracy there's a growing aftermarket of really tight EBR and JAE stocks that trap the action for 1 MOA shooting. One of these days gonna gets me one of 'dem.

I don't think that's unusual at all. The .308 platform AR's have had some growing pains. They have been plagued with magazine problems from the beginning. I'm fortunate that the AR I built runs 100%, if it had not you can bet I would be singing a different tune!

The M14/M1A is tried and true and responds well to relative simple accuracy mods. It's a great bang for the buck.

Irons at 200?
I don't think I could hit an eight inch target at that distance with irons, esp. if the wind were anything but dead calm.

Can you elaborate on the group sizes you were getting?

Nice shooting.
