3x Magnifer with Red Dot/Eotech

How many of you have purchased a 3x magnifier, and didn't like it?
I'm debating whether or not to spend 500+ on one of these with the swivel mount, but I'm not completely sold on the idea..

How many of you are currently using one? What are your thoughts? Does it get in the way when it's flipped to the side?

What is a good inexpensive option to start out with?

I have both and like it. Makes it possible to shoot 100Y with accuracy.

Otherwise (for me) getting past 50 was hard to see. I actually can see 100Y w/ iron sights much better than I could with the dot at that distance.

Me.

I bought a Aimpoint in a Larue FTS mount.

It made the rifle significantly heavier. When flipped to the side it unbalanced the rifle.

When slung, it made the pistol grip jab me in my fat gut.:D

It had very limited eye relief. It wasn't so bad forward to back, but your head has to be nearly perfectly behind it to see the image. Any variation and you were getting black crescents or complete black out.

With my eyes, it made the red dot look like comma turned 90 degrees.

Sighting in with it makes you completely off when using just the red dot. (I know, read the directions, but who does that.:rolleyes:)

Without any type of reticle it just makes the target look 3x closer, it doesn't have any reference points for hold over and because everything looked closer, it threw me off on my "normal" holdovers.

Although a 5.56 doesn't really recoil much, if you are shooting free hand and holding the rifle loosely, having it drive your glasses into the bridge of your nose smarts a little bit.:o

My advice would be if you want to try out the concept go with a really cheap Primary Arms version 1st. If you don't like it, you won't be out too much. Probably less than you would be out selling the Aimpoint versus retail price.

If I were going to setup a rifle for longer range shots, I would choose a magnified optic that had good reticle that I could use for repeatable hold overs and figure out some other way to deal with close shots. (Offset irons, offset RDS, barrel index shooting, just take it off an use the irons)

(I also tried the Trijicon TA33, and I didn't like it either, I posted a review on here back a while ago)

Why not just buy/use a quality 1.5-4 scope? Always wondered that.

Well,
  • an Eotech, sans magnifier, will be far faster up close than a scope of any sort.
    you can remove the magnifier
    you can replace the magnifier with a night vision device
    etc
Granted the Eotech MPO is pretty expensive, but it is versatile.

Personally, I prefer a fixed 3.5 ACOG for an all-around optic.
 
i'm sure they rock, but i can't justify paying more than my eotech just to zoom in my dot, i'd get a scope if i wanted long range
 
I used to run a 5 MOA red dot, with a 3X magnifier in a Larue Swivel Mount.

Good system, but honestly, I ran it without the magnifier most of the time. I preferred the red dot with a backup flip up iron sight.

This winter I went to a 1-4x scope from Vortex Optics. I think it's the most versatile, do all optic system for an AR. The reticle is accurate, and useful up close. Is it for everybody, no...some will like some will not. I love it, and will run it for a long time. It's mounted in a Larue mount, so I can take the entire scope system off and run a lightweight, irons only rifle.
