I have just purchased a Taurus 650CIA. It is supposed to shooit 357 & 38 spl. Is there a particular 357 ammo, is there a difference between 357 & 357 magum?:
A .357 or .357 magnum means the same. There is only 1 other .357 and it is a .357 Sig. Your gun will fire any .357 magnum ammo. You can also fire the cheaper .38 Special ammo in your gun. There are different bullet weights/designs of both rounds and it depends on what you need to use them for as to which to choose.
The only real problem with shooting both .38 specials and .357 mag in the same pistol is not using the same type of bullet. When you shoot jacketed bullets you need to remove any copper that may be left behind prior to shooting lead bullets. It is the same the other way around. When you don't remove the copper prior to shooting lead the lead will build up faster where ever there is copper in the rifling. Jacketed bullets just press the lead more into the rifling kind of like ironing it in. This makes it harder to remove the lead later. I prefer to use one or the other.
Jacketed bullets normally make cleaning easier. When I shoot both mags and specials the same day without cleaning in between I shoot the mags first then the specials. Carbon build up in the cylinders can make it a little harder to chamber the mags after using specials. This is not always the case but it does happen. Some people will just put a fired mag case (shot from the same pistol) in each chamber to remove most of the carbon build up if they shoot mag after specials. I have been known to fire 100 or more mag loads prior to shooting the same number of specials during an outing.
The .357 Sig is for a semi-auto. It is basicly a .40 S&W that has the neck reduced to hold a 9 mm bullet. These are much shorter over all and will not work in your revolver.
There are also .357 Magnum Silhouette and .357 Maximum. They are not to be used in your revolver.
