.380 fire in 9mm pistol?

I ran into a guy at the range who claims that a .380 round will chamber and fire in a 9mm. Since I am not really familiar with either cartridge...is this possible?

Yes if the extractor is in good condition,it will hold the 380 on the breech face and the round will fire.DON'T DO IT.Use only ammunition that the gun is chambered for.Anything else is dangerous.

Yes, it's possible but not recommended.

Time warp back to sometime in 1996 when the Penn Law Second Amendment Society is at The Firing Line at Front & Tasker streets in Philadelphia. I'm a few lanes down from Karen, our co-founder's girlfriend. Karen is shooting my Astra A100 in 9mm Luger.

Karen: "Hey Justin, your gun keeps jamming on me."

Me: "Mer? Let me see."

I walk over to her station, pick up my gun and fire the gun at the target. Recoil is very light and the slide does not cycle.

Me: "Must not be enough powder in these loads. You using factory ammo?"

Karen: "Yep, look at the box."

I take a look at the box and it's Remington UMC in .380 Auto. Urk.

We were lucky, don't let it happen to you!

The reason I asked is that this guy was telling me that he saw a National Guard pistol coach slip some .380 stuff in with the 9mm rounds into the magazine to help the shooter "cure" flinching. Before I discuss it any farther I wanted to know what I'm talking about. Thanks for the help.

It is dangerous because gas can flow back around the cartridge case, you will sometimes see melted primers at the range. Usually they are .380s that have been fired out of a 9mm, or .40 out of a 10mm.

I've done it a couple of times in my Glock. The only adverse reaction was that it did not completely cycle.

As far as "flinch testing" goes, I have a friend load a couple of duds in my magazines. It also helps me in clearing a misfire.

As a rule, please never use ammo not specified for the firearm in question. It's too risky.
