.380 Die Question

Newbie and first time poster. I would like to say I have already learned a lot from this forum and thanks to everyone for posting such helpful info for us that are new to reloading.

I'm wanting to reload 9mm and .380 rounds. From what I have read is that I should be using a taper die for both for use in semi auto's. The Hornady chart shows the same taper die (044170) for both 9mm & .380. Is this correct that the one die can be used on both?

Thanks for any help.

Yes, same taper crimp die for both. It'll require adjustment up and down of the die body for lengths of cases and minor adjustments of the taper crimp sleeve. By buying both complete sets you'll get two. Hornady sets often use the same die body with different inserts for different calibers but for 9MM and .380 the insert will be the same.

Yes RCBS is different as the crimp in built into the die not in a sleave insert. You are not limited to taper crimps either you can get factory crimp dies and roll crimp dies too.

Are you buying your dies individually?

If you are buying a 3 die set for 9mm or 380 are different and they will each include a taper crimp die as the default.

To repeat, this is not applicable to every brand. Most dies are bored out to fit the die, the die will not reach the crimp section until the shell holder reaches the die body. You should be able to crimp 380, 9, and 38 auto with the .389, I believe. You can use a 38. Die for 357 but not the other way. There may be other, such as the short .45 cap.

I'm the idiot who bought dies that turned out to fit only .357, and wound up buying a separate seater/crimper for .38.

Timsr, you may be correct for other brands, but Hornady three die sets do not come with a taper crimp die. They come with a sizer/decapper, an expander, and a seater (with a crimp function). I found this out the hard way and had to get a separate taper crimp die for my .380.
