.38 spl +p recommendations

Redneck that was a great article! I always carried Black Hills 125 grain +P, for no other reason then it was available and shot well. After reading Colorado Redneck's article I will be buying something else.

Hope none of us ever have to use ammo for real

A co-worker told me about the Remington ammo, and I respect that guy's opinion on anything to do with shooting or guns. So those Ultimate Home Defense rounds are what Mom has in her model 66 Smith and my little J frame has them too. She would be better than me if somebody needed shot---she has a mean streak. If it was up to me I would probably just poop and run.

With a 6-inch barrel I wouldn't worry too much, any hollow point will be effective.

But the FBI Load described above, the 158 grain LSWCHP +P, has a LONG history of being very effective at stopping bad guys. Federal and I believe Winchester offer it in addition to Remington, and probably some other makers.

It is an all lead, no jacket, lead semi-wadcutter hollowpoint.

pmc/eldorado Starfire hp's have been very destructive in the denim clothed ballistic gelatin that I have tried them on (4" GP 100). created a wound channel larger than the gold dot 125gr. +p's. This was with BOTH the old Eldorado line and the new PMC Starfire lines. your mileage may vary

I tested some Buffalo Bore 158gr LSWC +P in my 6" GP100 and got 1157fps or 469ft/lbs.

This round outperformed Winchester White Box 110gr Magnum loads in terms of energy which produced 454ft/lbs in the same gun.

That's pretty darn good for a .38 spl!

Top .38spl +P home defense rounds.....

In the .38spl +P, I'd suggest these top rounds:
The Speer Gold Dot 135gr JHP +P, the Buffalo Bore lead 158gr SWC-HP +P, the MagSafe SWAT .38spl +P, Corbon DPX, Ranger T T-series .38spl load.

My choice would be the "FBI Load" as produced by Winchester, Remington, Federal, or Buffalo Bore (I prefer the Remington version for snubs, but I think any would work fine in a 6" barrel).

its a .357 carry a 158 grain semi-jacket hollow point with a tungsten rod core if you can find them you will not get better than that.

where would a person find a round with a tungsten core? they are illegal by federal law, and making them yourself would be a felony, if I read the laws correctly.

I will stand with many of the others. a 158 grain lswchp, as long as the alloy is soft. A 6 inch barrel will get good performance from them.

So Hornaday does the best but still no respect? They ARE the best!! every test I have read they are impressed with it. Guess us few will keep the secret.
