.38 spl loads to shoot 158gn/800fps/4in

I'm just getting started at reloading. I need a load that'll make IDPA power floor, which means I need to get 158 grain bullet going out at least 800 fps out of 4in barrell. My revolver can handle Winchester's SuperX +P (which is the FBI load as I understand it).

Is Natchez a decent place to get the supplies? I found their prices on ammo and accessories consistently below everybody else's but in this case I don't know what to look for.

Thanks for advice.

4.1 gr of Unique under a cast lead 158/160 gr SWC should exceed 800 fps. out of a 4". Alliant lists 4.3 gr as a max load @ 900 fps. I backed off of that by some, and worked up to 4.1 gr. Accuracy was/is very good.
Downside (as always w/Uinque) is that it's a dirty load to shoot.

Since you are loading to specific numbers you need to invest in a chrono. Then you will know exactly how a load will perform in that particular handgun.

kmicic,

Natchezss.com is a good place to find supplies. MidwayUSA.com and Widener's aren't bad, either. I usually buy powder, bullets and primers locally or at gun shows so I don't have to pay shipping and hazmat fees.

I do order cast bullets when I can't find good ones locally. I like Meister's. It has been my experience that bullet prices that look good at first glance aren't that good when shipping and handling charges are added. I've had the best luck with MidwayUSA, but it is in a neighboring state for me.

There are all kinds of good combos that will get a 158 grain bullet going 800 fps out of a 4" barrel. I have been using 231 and Unique because I have a large stock. I use 4.7 grains of 231 right now in my K-frame Smith & Wesson revolvers. You could go a little lighter and still get 800 fps I suspect. You'll need a chrono as someone else mentioned. They are not that expensive these days. Or someone will probably loan you one if you promise not to shoot it. :o
