Thinking about going ahead and getting my CCW. Is the .38 good to carry or in the long run would it be better to jus go ahead and get the 9mm what has promted the thought is that I have found a charter pistol for under $300 and most of the compact 9mm I have looked at is $400 or more. Any sugestions would be well welcomed thanks in advance

They both are good,,,

.38 special, 9mm, .45 ACP, and all the ones in between,,,
They all do the job and do it well.

There is endless debate about which is "Better",,,
No one has any conclusive data that will prove one over the other.

Buy the gun that you like and can afford.

But honestly,,,
They all put people under.

38 spl. is a good CCW gun lots of selection and if you buy good condition used not a bad price. Something along the lines of a S&W 642 is a good choice, good in pocket(in pocket holster), good on draw(with a bit if practice),can be shot a lot for fun and practice. Biggest minuses of a J frame smith is the 5 round capacity. If you are looking for a mouse sized 9m/m look into the Kel-Tec P11 around $300.00 small enough for comfortable pocket carry(use a pocket holster) and has 10 or 12 round magazines. Minuses of Kel-Tec good carry not a shoot a lot at range gun. Not made for lots of rounds down range made as a SD(shoot a little carry a lot) also uncomfortable to shoot small and light enough it tends to bite the hand.

I agree with Aarond.
A friend of mine shot a home intruder in the chest one time with a S&W mod 60 .38spl.
The intruder turned and fell dead on the spot. Only left a small blood spot.
Shot placement trumps caliber every time.

Why not one of each?:)

But I have a few of each and prefer the S&W J Frame as my fav CCW
a .38SPL with the right ammo is plenty deadly

For like, the third time today,,,

The 2" Charter Arms Undercover is a nice snubbie,,,
Cost isn't all that high and it's dependable.

I'm not trying to be snide here,,,
But today the Charter Arms guns have come up quite often.

Buying a Charter is like buying yourself a Ford Fiesta,,,
It's not as nice a car as say a Toyota Camry,,,
But it gets you down the road just fine.

LOL yes I have even checked into the mouse size 9mm I have a large hand and the kel tec, Tarus would hardley fit in my palm the only one that I found to be half way comfortable was the Ruger LC9 with out the red dot. Dimond Back I have read and seen more negative then positive I did see one and It looked and felt very cheap a poor quality

I confidently carry a 38Spl Colt Detective snubbie stoked with 158gr LSWCHP almost everyday. An outstanding handgun and an excellent cartridge.

LCR

I carry a Ruger 38sp+p lcr in a remora holster, very easy to conceal IWB or in an Uncle Mikes pocket holster. I have a Ruger SP-101 but a little heavy for carry IMO. Good luck on your choice!:)

I have a 642 and an LC9. The LC9 is easier to shoot accurately, even with the long trigger pull. I find it better for pocket carry. The 642 is more comfortable in an IWB holster. Whichever you choose, practice, you may only get 1 shot.

It's an excellent choice. I think that most who carry a BUG, find weight to be the most important factor in choosing which one to get. I will send you a pm on where to get a slightly better quality, light weight .38 for the same money.

The issue with something like 642, which I carry, BTW, is the trigger. The DAO trigger makes it more difficult to shoot quickly and accurately than the triggers on the semis I own. But since I pocket carry, the 642 goes with me more than anything else

Try borrowing or renting both types and see which you like better and buy acordingly

I have S&W models 37, 637,and 60 that I can carry in my front pocket,or my models 64, and 66, in a OWB holster.(all snubbies with hammers)

Or I carry a Ruger LCP.380, or LC9 .9mm in my front pocket.

I have found the LC9 to be quite accurate for it's size, and with seven in the magazine, and one in the chamber, it will probably be my main ccw.

I love my snub, it goes any where and everywhere. If your willing to put in the time to become proficient, you'll have a great carry gun.

My small carry gun package is a S&W stainless model 60 with a 2" bbl riding in a Kramer pocket holster with a Crimson Trace laser sight.

But I have a few of each and prefer the S&W J Frame as my fav CCW

My J Frame in a Bianchi pocket holster is also my carry gun of choice. Don't forget, you do have to show a certain level of proficiency with each gun you list on your permit and since I've shot revolvers all my adult life, I feel more comfortable with them than an auto pistol. Smithy.

I carry a Detective Special that I bought brand new back in 1984. I've always felt confident with six hardcast wadcutters in the wheel. That being said, I also own a Charter 12 oz. Undercover Lite, which is fun to shoot and gives me a chance to "rest" the old Colt at the range while still getting my practice in.

Would this be a fair price?

I have found a used charter arms off-duty for $249 + tax

Also can you tell the date of the pistol by the serial number

If you are just going to get ONE for packing...

Any one of the above will do (all .357s but you can use +p .38s fine in these.)

Or if you like the concept of a Winter/Summer gun combo, that is one that is larger for the winter (and coats) and one smaller for the summer (and t-shirts):

Personally I'd go for the winder/summer comb. I use Glock 26 for the winter, and S&W 642 for the summer.
