.38 Special + P in my gun...is it ok?

A question,

My personal protection piece is a 5 shot Rossi .38 Special. Obviously not an expensive revolver but has been reliable and faily accurate with the 1000 or so rounds I have shot through it.

Question...will a +P load function safely in this particular gun? What exactly are the differences between a +P and a regular .38 Special load?..I was under the impression that the +P is a hotter load with a lighter bullet.

Any help is appreciated...

maybe check your owners manual or the rossi website,
i assume they have one. if it is like S&Ws site, it
will say what they can handle.
