38 special bullets

Hey guys, looking for recommendations for reloading a 38 special load in a 357 magnum cases. Will be using HP-38 powder. Also what bullet weight is recommended. Thanks.

What are you loading for? Plinking? Target? small game? CAS? Self defense?

What gun? Barrel length? (Rifle or pistol)?

Different objectives will take you to different solutions...

I'm going to assume this is for light, cheap, target shooting loads for a .357 gun, for which I'll suggest 158gr SWC, either cold swaged, or cast for the easiest to get load data. Use mid 38 as starting loads, or even .357 starting loads for lead are pretty mild.

Actually just checked Hogdon's website and starting load for 158grSWC in .357 IS a .38 spl load -

3.4 HP-38

796fps

12,600 CUP

Thanks for the replies guys, the gun is for my Dad, and I don't have the particulars on it right now except that it's a 6" barrel. He will be using jacketed bullets only.

Disregard my prior post except the part about using .357 starting load data from Hogdon's website. Don't load below starting data. Many "jacketed" bullets have issues below minimum.
