.38 Special ammo that didn't fire

I was shooting my Taurus 85 today using 130 grain Winchester supreclean FMJ ammo & I had 3 bullets that did not fire the first time ( this was on 3 seperate occasions with the cylinder fully loaded). I looked at the primer on the 3, & they had a mark on the primer from the firing pin. I put the bullets through the gun again & then they fired. Is this a problem w/ the ammo or is this a problem with the gun? I shot a box of 50 of these rounds & had this problem with 3 of the shells. Thanks for any help!

Pontiac - What you experienced is technically called "misfires", commonly caused by too light of a hammer strike or too-hard primers. Others here, with more experience with that particular gun/ammo combo, will likely chime in shortly

Of particular concern for me is to be sure that you understand that those rounds could turn into a "hang fire" - a perceptible delay in the ignition. If you have it happen again, keep gun pointed downrange and do not pull trigger again or open the action for at least 30 seconds! Hang fires are rare, but can be quite serious if the procedures above are not followed.

Thanks for the info. I was careful when the round did not fire. It made me very nervous when I finally checked & there was a dent in the primer. It reminded me of a video I watched where a guy had a rifle, pulled the trigger & there was a delay with the round.

The win superclean ammo has a lead free primer which can be harder to set off,if you've had a trigger job or lighted your trigger pull this can make the problem worse.

Taurus apparently had a batch of 85's that would light-strike (this was 3 to 5 years ago). When I first picked up my 85 Ultra light (after owning 2 stainless 85's), I had a problem with misfires. I sent the gun back to the factory (through the dealer) for repairs. Never had any problem with the stainless guns. And, no problem with the 85 Ultra Light since either. It's my primary carry piece.

In your earlier post, you mention this gun doesn't have the integral trigger lock mechanism and had Uncle Mike grips. You questioned if the gun may have been used. I suspect it was a used gun....or, if new, it's been setting around for almost 5 years (or more).

I suggest you send the gun back to the factory for the misfire situation and run 200 or mores rounds through it ASAP when it gets back.

As far as being new or used? Well, Taurus warrants the gun for life or the gun, regardless of the owner (this doesn't apply to the aluminum framed guns, by the way). And, if you got as good a deal as you say you did...I wouldn't worry about it.

I assume you did buy the revolver from a dealer, correct?

Yes I purchased this gun through the dealer. The dealer is far from my residence. So you think I should send it back to be fixed? Would it be easier to call Taurus for a repair number & then ship it directly to them? I seem to have bad luck with guns lately.

Before i would send it back i would try different ammo and see if the problem goes away, regular win white box,pmc or umc works well in my 85.If the problem continues it could just be a weak spring which is something you could order and replace yourself or have a local smith do it for you.Just something to think about.

I'd send it directly to the factory if going to the Dealer is a hassle. I would let the Dealer know about the problem though.

As far as trying other ammo...this might work if you're willing t do that (I wouldn't). I've had semi-auto's that wouldn't digest some brands, but never a revolver.

And, as far as replacing the mainspring yourself (or have a 'Smith do it)...might void the Warranty.

When I sent mine back to the factory, it was returned in 2½ weeks.

I realize some people haven't had the same experience...

...but, I had a problem with my first 731UL.
Taurus REPLACED (!) the pistol in less than a week. People will chime in and say that they have had vastly different experiences with Taurus, but that's how my deal went down.
To make up for it, Taurus did a trigger job and made everything else on the new revolver just perfect. The crane closes like it's on roller bearings.

I would try a different box of the same ammo you had problems with, maybe the first box you fired was the problem and not your 85.However if the problem arises again i agree you should send it back to taurus.I've only had to send one revolver back to them and it was returned fixed in less than 2 weeks (i'am in AZ) that i think was excellent service.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I am going to try more ammo & see if this problem continues. If so, I am going to send it to Taurus for repair. I'll post my results. Thanks again!

FAILURES TO FIRE

73pontiac---If it's a Taurus, it's not "bad luck", it's typical!!
(Not only FTF but all kinds of problems.)
I've never had a FTF with that ammunition--100's of rounds.
Of course, I no longer own (or buy) a Taurus! :barf:

Now, not only is that an unfair statement..it's an untrue statement.

I don't know why, but Taurus really started getting damned by some folks right around the time S&W sold out to HUD.

WELL......I guess that's a matter of opinion about UNTRUE.

A rather large dealership owner told me that Taurus was the only line of handguns that he stocked that he had to inspect every one received before placing them in his showcases to sell. As a result of this inspection, he had to send "at least" 50% of them back due to deficiencies, either workmanship or mechanical--more mechanical.

I bought two---both had to go back at my expense.

I LEARNED MY LESSON-----NO MORE FOR ME!! :barf:
