I want to date my deceased uncles' .38 police special S&W. Serial number 1185xx. Nice wood grips but obvious wear. He was a law constable in his Michigan town.
 
S&W use to reuse the same serial numbers on different models. So, need to figure out which model you have first.
5 shot or 6? Did you take the serial number from the underside of the frames grip butt and include any letter prefixes, if any?
Is the caliber on the side of the barrel marked 38 S&W only or 38 S&W Special or SPL?
