38/44 Outdoorsman

Through some trading, I will be getting a real nice Smith and Wesson 38/44 Outdoorsman in about a week. All original and in great shape. Hardly fired.

It is a post war, around 1951.

Can any 38/44 owners share their thoughts and tips?

Pictures?

I plan on shooting it a lot this summer. What loads do you prefer? I am not really set up for handloading.

What would be a good "period" holster for it. 6 1/2 inch barrel.

Thanks

Cool, bout the stoutest .38special one will find. Great bullseye gun once you find the ammo it likes.

That's the one the ammo folks had in mind when they labeled some of their stuff "High Speed"....."For heavy frame guns only" etc.

For external, belt, wear.....a Hunter top strap would be appropriate. Often find like new ones for five or ten bucks.

Nice catch.

I think that I would have to go look at El Paso Sadderly for some of their vintage stuff. Maybe a lined Tom Threepersons? About $60 plus shipping and would very old-school-cool I think.

I just about bought one of these this weekend, only it didn't have the adjustable sights, I think they were calling it a model 20. I was impressed by the clean lines and solid feel, the $340 price tag may have been ok, except I've bought my quotient of toys for the month and I couldn't justify it. I bet you got a great revolver, have fun.
