.38/.357 Stake Shoot Round?

What is a good .38 spl or .357 magnum round for stake shoots? (A stake shoot is where teams of shooters shoot a 4X4 in half, the quickest team winning.) Need a load that is likely to be available commercially.

I've never heard of a stake shoot, Guy but it sounds like a lot of fun. I would imagine a full or semi wadcutter lead bullet would do more cutting than a fmj.

A slow hit beats a fast miss.

I did a little testing prior to a stake shoot a couple of years ago. I found that FMJ and HPs worked about the same. The semi-wad cutters (45ACP) seemed to perform the best.

Are you doing this with a revolver? If so I hope you have alot of speed loaders. Every stake shoot I've ever been in was a very high round count affair.

Tip: Designate a shooter, preferably one with a 45 to start shooting the top of the stake after its been whittled down to a hard to hit splinter in the middle. The fat bullet can usually force to top over with the leverage available at the top of the board.

Yeah, stake shoots are the only time we get sort of silly/rowdy. Several stakes are set out and a team is assigned to cut each one. Last year we had something like 20 shooters firing all at once, two sessions with a total of almost 40 shooters. Quite a bit of noise.

Like Bullwinkle says there is a fairly high round count, though we revolver types don't spend too many as the race gun types have their 20+ round mags and don't take the time to reload often.

One of the revolver shooters does shoot a 625 with .45 acp rounds, so maybe that will be the ticket.

Thanks!
