Can a 35 rem be rechambered to 358 win?? the two look very close with the 358 win a tad larger(longer) . Bases also look close. Are 358win pressures too high in a mod 8/81 remington?? Marlin 336:confused: ?? thank guys. Jiminthecorner

Let's do a little arithmetic.
.35 Rem .458 casehead diameter 33,500 psi
.358 Win .470 casehead diameter 52,000 CUP, probably more in psi but let's just go with that.
That is 5% more casehead area and 55% more pressure for 63% more load on the bolt.
Not in my Model 8 or 336, you're not.

Now a .300 Savage Model 81 might stand it, built for a 46,000 CUP cartridge, the .358 would only be a 13% overload. But where to get a barrel and would the magazine work for the longer OAL of the .358?

Marlin (and Winchester) made lever action rifles beefed up for .356 Win which is just a .358 with a little semi-rim for use in lever actions and blunt bullets for use in tubular magazines. Maybe you could tinker with one of their extractors and get it to handle .358, they do ok with .35 Rem, after all. If you could find one.

358 norma

Dear Shooter:
Listen to Jim - he's got it right!
I just built a little 358 Winchester on a Mauser action and it's a jewel. No, you can't buy factory ammo but I resize 308 and reduce the load 1 gr. due to the heavier case. I feel the 358 is a fine cartridge - it pushes a 250 gr. bullet to a respectful velocity. Yes, it's a close range gun limited to about 200 yds., (200 yards is "long-range" to this boy)!
That 358 Norman is one mean cartridge!
Listen to Jim - after all the 35 Remington would kill any dinosaur you would confront during the Mesozoic era!
