How does this compare to the 7-08? I have been looking for a blr in 7-08. Are they about the same? I'm not familar with this caliber. thanks

The .358 Winchester is basically the .308 Win. necked up. I only know of one remaining factory load, a Winchester 200gr. Silvertip @ 2490fps/2753 foot-pounds.

The 358 Win is a 308 necked up to .358"

You can get .358 bullets from 180 grains up to 310 grains.

You can also use .357" pistol bullets for the 38 special/357 mag cartridges for varmint or low recoil loads.

With 250 grain bullets & a 22" barrel you should be able to get 2300 to 2400 fps depending on the gun.

Or you can drive a 158 JHP @ 2700+ fps from a 22" barrel.

If you handload the 358 would be fine for most any game animal in North America out to 150 yards with the correct bullet. Out to 200 yards for deer size game. And with a 158 grain or 125 grain Speer Gold dot it would make an interesting Goblin round.

Personally I think Cooper's Scout rifle makes more sense for hunting if chambered in 358 Win...only problem is that the 358 win is not a common factory caliber.

The 358 is my personal favorite. I own four. It is much different than the 7mm-08 and any comparrison is really unfair. The 7mm has much less recoil, much more velocity, but relies more on bullet performance for a kill. The 358 is a shorter range number but quite a thumper. I'd feel safe using it on any N. American game out to 300 yards.

.358's

I agree. The .358's are a neglected group of very fine cartridges. I have a range of rifles from .35 Rem to .358 Norma Mag, and they all work well on big game. I am a bit confused though, when did 300 yards become short range? :-)

El Lobo. Haven't you heard? If you don't shoot some poor ungulate at 600 to 800 yards with a super zapper overly fat .300 whatever, you just aren't with it. I just wonder how much more B.S. the "egg-spurts" in the gun rags expect us to swallow?
I like the .35's too. One .358 Win. and two .35 Whelans reside at my happy homestead.
Frankly, I like to see the whites of their eyes, whenever possible. :)
