.357mag-Hydrashoks/Talons or Gold Dots?

Just trying to find a decent carry round...something that makes big holes and has stopping power. I've shot the Talons...errr...the 'older' ones...but not the other ones. Have a box of GD's at the moment.

Um...I'm not sure you want to be carrying full .357 magnum rounds (too much penetration and risk of hitting innocents--I recommend .38 spl +P's). But, to answer your question, I like the Hydra-Shoks...

QS...good point. A lot of my carry is out in the woods, mountains, etc when I'm photoing, either models or nature. So I'll carry full loads then. Maybe switch to the +p's in town. :)

Santana,

Very good idea. In the woods, .357 magnum is a very good caliber should a Mountain Lion or other predator attacks you. Its very good on bad people.

Then around town, just switch to .38 spl +P as you said.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with carrying full power .357 Mag loads for self defense... in fact, it's RECOMMENDED. But you need to stick with the lighter-WEIGHT loads to minimize penetration. Keep the defense load around 125 grains or less.

I think the point QS was trying to make was don't use 180 grain .357 Mag loads for self defense. The HEAVY-weight loads will penetrate much more. They are better for hunting.

It's been agreed upon by MANY experts that faster loads decelerate more quickly because they open more quickly. So for self defense, you want speed. That deceleration is very important. A .38 Spl may actually penetrate MORE because it may not have sufficient speed to open up. Use the 147gr 9mm as an exapmle of a failure.

In my opinion, you WANT full-power light-weight loads for sd. Otherwise, you might as well buy a smaller & cheaper .38 Special.

For personal defense purpose I like Federal 125gr JHP. For outdoor purpose I like Remington 158gr JHP.

I believe the old Black Talon .357 Mag load used a 200gr bullet.

I prefer Winchester's 145gr Silvertip over all others.

Federal Hydrashok's ARE available in 130gr.

When I carry my .357MAG, (Yes, this 9mm man does sometimes carry a .357MAG!!) I load it with 150gr ElDorado Starfires. Looking at them, they are the closest I have seen to the old Black Talon design. At least they look mean!! ;)

I stand corrected. I wasn't thinking of the 130gr Personal Defense HydraShok load.

And... I belive I was also wrong about the Black Talon's bullet weight. I believe it's 180gr not 200gr as I earlier wrote.

Hey! It's Monday!

I too prefer the Winchester 145 grain STHP over all other .357 loads against two-legged aggressors.

And as noted, the Win BT was 180 grain. I used that load successfully on whitetail deer, and it worked as advertised.

I use the Winchester 145 gr. Silvertip as well. Good performance, manageable recoil, minimal muzzle flash (even in 3" barrel), and relatively inexpensive. You can't beat it in this caliber.
