I have been on a few structure fires recently, but I don't do anything. I am on the Paramedic Rescue. I spent eight years on an engine and decided to try something new. We pretty much secure the utilites and set up rehab. I usually work with a rookie partner and they usually ask if they can go in, which is OK as long as I stay outside in case anyone gets hurt. My partner got to ventilate a roof last cycle, which thrilled him to no end.
I know all about system status management. We don't use it on the FD (although we do use vehicle locators), but I worked for seven years with a private ambulance; actually several private ambulance companies that used system status management. Of course you could use the lap top in the rig, but no easy internet connection on our pay.
Wouldn't this job be fun without the paperwork. I spend more time on paperwork than I do running the calls. At least ours is all computerized. I thought a few times about working part time for my old employer, but the thought of actally having to hand write a report keeps me away.
Of course with the over time we have been getting, it is a moot point. My first check with 48 hours of OT bought me the lap top. The second check with 72 hours of OT bought me the gig of RAM. THe third check of 72 hours of OT bought me a submachine gun. My next check is only a measly 48 hours of OT which will go into the bank for a new house.
