.357 SIG choices

I've just about decided that my next pistol will be chambered for .357 SIG. The problem is that there's only a few people out there making pistols in this caliber. I know you can get conversion barrels for all sorts of .40s, but I'd like to stick to a stock weapon. There's SIG of course, and Glock, both pricey. S&W made a Sigma in .357 SIG but I've heard horror stories about Sigma quality.

Anyone have experience or comments Taurus PT957? It runs a couple hundred less than the Glocks and SIGs in .357SIG. Appears to be built around the Beretta 92 action that Taurus manufactured under license, but with an enclosed slide and frame mounted safety/decocker (I hate the flip up safeties on Berettas, Smiths and Walthers). Barrel comes ported from the factory. Available in stainless, which I'd prefer. Can be carried cocked and locked or DA first shot. On paper, it looks like a peach of a gun, but I'd like to hear from those who have shot it.

I really like the looks of the Taurus 957. I don't see the similarities to the Beretta though. You may have been thinking of the Taurus 92 or 99. Or maybe the INSIDES are just like the insides of a Beretta. (I wouldn't know about that) This is a picture of the 957 that was on the Taurus website.

I wish they didn't feel the NEED to port the gun. Takes away a bit of the effectiveness. If they did it so that it didn't beat up the frame, then strengthen the frame. The gun's heavy enough to not be too painful to shoot.

Anyways, I'd get one if it weren't for the porting though. But it's strange how I want a Glock 23C as well. Who wants a ported Glock??? ME!

get the Taurus and report back,
Ben

Don't know what the cost of the Taurus is new, but shopping around you can get the Sig in the neighborhood of $450-500 for excellent used guns. See the thread concerning the Sig today. I pickup up one at my club for $475 with 10 rounds run through it.(P239)

i was untill recently planning on getting a .357sig of my own. i decided against it since i would mostly shoot 9mm thru it anyway i might as well get another 9mm. that way i don't have to have more kinds of ammo laying around.

i would get the glock. the difference in price is IMHO worth the extra RELIABILITY, accuracy, durability, and its an all around better gun
besides around here (NJ) glocks only go for about $479 and that makes taurus's only about $100-150 cheaper which isn't that much for a better gun.

i have held one of those taurus's in that size of the .357sig one (the one i shot was a .45) and it just felt cheaply made in my hand. the grip felt unnatural and the gun shot poorly. also i have seen numerous of the full sized taurus's jam and malfunction at the range.

the best of the .357sig guns available IMO are the glocks and sigs. i would go for the glock 31

You might check on actual prices on the Glocks. From what I've seen here in NC, the Glocks in .357 aren't selling as well as the .9mm and .40 versions, and you can sometimes get them cheaper. For instance, I got my Glock 31 for $389 last summer. Glock prices are up some since then, but I think you still stand a better chance of getting a price break on the .357s than you do on the other more popular calibers.

Incidentally, my 31 has been totally satisfactory.

LE agencies have done some very extensive T&Es of pistols. The Glock, SIG, Beretta, and HK are the way to go.

The Secret Service, Texas DPS/Rangers, VA and DE state police, Alameda county sheriffs, Springfield and Richmond PDs use the SIGs in 357.

The INS/BP likes the Beretta, SIG and HK in 40.

The DEA likes the SIG, Glock, and HK in 40.

The FBI (and many others)likes the Glock in 40.

In 357 I like the SIGs and USPs best. The SIGs are the way to go if ya want to get/change factory barrels and mags easily. My Glocks in 40/357 were not as accurate or reliable, but it could just be me. YMMV.

I don't represent an agency. But I definitely recommend the Glock 35 with an aftermarket 357SIG barrel. Unfortunately, that's aprox $550 for the pistol and $150-$200 for the barrel. If Glock would make a 5.32" 357 SIG barrel, the price would be fine.

With the size, weight, and lockup of the Glock 35, it is exceptionally soft shooting for a magnum 357 SIG, as well as very fast and accurate with follow-up shots. I believe the G35 is a very strong competitor to the SIG 226, with the added advantage of having a little longer barrel and more velocity.

I'd sure like to see an agency pick up some Glock 31's or 35's in 357SIG. Right now, Sig owns the market. The Glock polymer frame is well suited to handle the 357SIG punishment.

Been very satisfied with my Glock 33, one double feed on the 70th round, after 1500 rounds, proud to say, no jams. I chose the M33 because of the size, it disappears in my pocket if a holster cannot be utilized. M33

you might check the pawn shops for a used glock. I found one for 339.00 and I can see more wear and tear on the gun in the couple of boxes of ammo that I have put through it then when I bought it. I don't think It had a box through it . the guy said it was that cheap because the 357sig is not a popular round. which I think is great because so far I love the gun

Anyone considered the Sig SP 2340 in 357Sig.

I own one and can testify that mine is 100% reliable, very accurate, smooth to operate, the DA/SA trigger is a little stiff but smooth, not bad recoil, and only cost about 500 dollars new.

Just a thought, k

k in AR,

Yep, I have considered one. I'm going looking today to see if I can find a decent price on one. If not I'll probably come home with a "real" .357, a Ruger SP-101.

I recently picked up a sig P229 sport and have found it to be wonderfully accurate, a pussycat to shoot and a "blast" on the range. I can easily shoot 1 ragged hole groups at 20 yards with 10 rnds. Not to bad for a factory gun. The only other pistols I have that will do that is my Baer's.

Save up, get a sig!
