.357, shot for the first time today!

I shot my new (to me) Colt Trooper MK III in .357 today for the first time. I must admit that I was a little timid shooting it, worried that the kick would be excessive. I was pleasantly surprised by how LITTLE kick it actually has. I was shooting Winchester soft points. My Bersa .380 kicked as much as this thing. I guess maybe it has to do with the weight of this revolver, but now I'm ready for the .44 Mag!!!! Well, maybe not...

Congrats on your new 357. I absolutely love mine. You are correct in determining weight had a lot to do with the low recoil. Some people may tell you that your gun is just too heavy and their 1oz-feather-light-some-material-ium is better. Just remember who is going to have more fun at the range.

Ahh...a day with a box full of 357magnum loads...

Does it get any better?

Not too hot. (like a 44mag or 454)
Not too cool. (like a 38spl or 45lc)
Not too expensive. (well, reloads are REALLY cheap, but, Federal American Eagle 158gr JSP are on special at most places)
Not too cheap. (well, speer blazer ammo is really cheap...alum cases don't extract well from my guns)

Just an all around fun round with fun guns and a fun place to be.

no chance of a hold up at a range.
No chance of Osama or any other tango ruining your day.

Have fun!!!

If your MK111 has the wood grips, Pacmayer (sp) grips make a good rubber grip for it, and it helps really tame those hot loads!
I got my Dad's Trooper that he carried close to 20 yrs. Man they shoot great don't they!

good deal

I think I'm really going to like this gun! I was all psyched out about the .357 but it shoots really SWEET!

The gun has pachmyr rubber grips and it really felt good. I haven't had it at the range yet, but when I do I hope to get an even better idea of how accurate it is. Today I took it out to the woods and just shot it a couple of times (safe, good backdrop, etc.) to see how it shoots.

I'm a happy camper!

I have to say that the .357 is perhaps one of the most fun and versatile cartridges ever developed. It's nothing less than a blast to enjoy!

Last weekend I took my .357 to qualify as one of my possible CCW guns. Afterwards we set up metal targets to play for a while. Sure missed my glock in the games.
I'm such a wimp! After shooting about 150 rounds of full house .357 loads, I had blood all over my new wood grips. The blister is healed now, but I'm bringing my 9mm for fun shooting next time!
4" SW 65. Old Factory Remington HiSpeed .357 125grain. ;)

drop down

I've got 3 357's and love them all. first was a Colt trooper like above, 2nd was a Single Action Sauer and Sons (Really pretty and fun but not practical) and the last is the tops and my general drive around & carry gun a S&W model 19 with a 4" barrel...

But, None of them are actually fun for me to shoot any length of time with full 357 loads... I prefer to shoot 38's at the range.

So, my personal preference is to shoot light wad cutters while practicing and then load gold dot high end rounds in the weapon the rest of the time.
(Yes, I do shoot 6 or 12 of these every once and a while to remind me of what is going to happen if the need arizes.)

the size and wieght of the revolver determine's the amount of "kick" the gun will have. OUt of my 6" gp100 I can shoot mags all day. out of my 2" sp101 my wrist is in pain and at about 50 to 100 rounds my pointer finger gets blistered. it feel's like carpel tunnel kicking in. It motivated me to buy a recoil absorbing glove. you will feel the sharp recoil of a .357 mag more evidently painful in medium to small and compact frame handguns. :)

.357 Magnum: the round that does nothing the best but does everything very well. Well, maybe it's the best against two-legged critters.
