357 SD Ammo

Just a quick note, if anyone's interested.

I was testing ammo yesterday and I've found a load that I'm switching to for my SP101.

158 gr. Federal hydra-shock.

Why?
1. Less flash/muzzle blast.

2. Even though they are 158 grain, I'm getting an average of 1233fps out of a 1 7/8" barrel, and the extreme spread was under 35 fps. (Three 5 shot strings over the chrono)

Recoil is heavier than the 125 golden sabers I've been carrying, but accuracy difference is nil.

Hope this interests somebody.

In my S&W M60 I carry Remington Golden Sabre 125g JHPs. Work well with the gun and that Golden Sabre bullet expands quite well.

Sixgunner, that is the load I have carried for the last 4+ years, and have been totally satisfied with.

But less muzzle flash, coupled with another 100 ft lbs energy, at the expense of a moderate recoil increase works for me.

This is not a load to consider if the Golden Saber is at your limit of recoil control.

I use that same load in my Model 19-4, and my Model 65-3. Another one that works well for me in those two Smiths is the Speer 158 Gr GoldDot HP.

Currently using Remington 125gr JHP in my S&W Mdl 28. Feels the same as 158gr 38 Spl +P except for the muzzle flash, which is very impressive. My snubbies all carry Federal 158gr LSWCHP 38Spl+P. If it doesn't expand at least it will penetrate to the boiler room. HTH.

357 Mag. 60 gr. TFSP 1975 fps / 520 flbs

This is one thing that always bothered me about RBCD ammo in 357 Magnum. Why does it list this 357 magnum load as being well over 400 fps SLOWER than the same weight 357 sig load

Currently use the Winchester 110gr jhp in my 3" Sp. Don't really mind the muzzel flash I get in return for less recoil. However always open to new ideas, may give the federal a try.

I've actually changed my .357 carry load, to the 158-grain Buffalo Bores. They smoke, even out of my super-short (2 3/4") Security-Six, and they have decent sectional density to get to those hard-to-reach places. :)

I have been using the 158gr. Hydra shoks for about 2 years now with my S&W 640. A little tough on the wrist but most full house .357's will be out of a J-Frame.

Q for .357 buffs: was 158 gr the "original" .357 mag load? I seem to recall that, but don't know much abt the history of the cartridge.

I've settled on Win Super-X 158 gr as the primary loads for my GP100 and Marlin 1894C (HP's mostly for the Ruger and SP's for the carbine). They shoot the best and simplify things logistically. And, Ga Arms makes a reduced velocity 158 gr FMJ that works well for practice w/out changing POI too badly at modest distances.

I carried pmc 150gr starfires in my 3" 65-3 cause they're very accurate and easy to control.I'am now checking out cor-bons 140gr 357's,speer 158gr GD's and winchester 145gr silvertips.
