.357 "parkerized" s&w 586 6"

I've got a line on getting a .357 S&W 586 with a 6" barrel. It runs great, only issue is that it has a weird kind of matte, flat finish on it. BUT, the asking price is only $350.

Should I hold off or jump on this?

If it's a good gun, that's cheap these days, for a 586.
If you're not looking for a collector grade, that's a good deal for a shooter.
I'd buy it, if it passed inspection.

That is one

Cheap price. It's about what one would have to pay in the late '80s for it. Why aren't you posting pictures of your new used gun?

Here it is.

Like most everyone here, I just think guns are cool, some of them are ever just plain sexy. But I'm a budget shooter, so ultimately for me, its all about the bang when you pull the trigger.

Looks like a serious gun to me.

Have you had it out to the range yet?

I'm of the group that thinks S&W, Colt, Ruger and a few others automatically means there is a certain level of quality in their products and in their customer service. Now OF COURSE there are occasional exceptions but mostly they are 'good guns' and the companies seem to take care of the 'lemon' that inevitably sneaks out the door of any manufacturing plant.

In short I think you got a great deal on a pretty good gun.

I don't know who did the finish, and the picture isn't good enough to see detail in it. If anyone had designs on "collector value", that has been destroyed with the finish. But no worries! While they have some manner of a 'collectible' value, their tangible value is as a shooter, and at $350, I agree with everyone else. You -MUST- buy that revolver. Ya got to!

Now before someone else says it, let it be seen HERE, I was the first in the thread to say, "Man, that looks like a Colt Peacekeeper!" :D (Google image that one if you don't know)

just got it home

The finish isn't horrible, it looks good enough to hold up. But the most important thing to me, is how the gun handles and the trigger is perfect. I'll get it out to the range asap and report back.

I talked to the guy and he said it shoots great but he was just looking for turkey shooting gear. I get the feeling that this gun will be way more accurate than I am.

Considering in taxes, this gun is in the same price range a new Rossi. I really think I've got a winner.

At one time, S&W would offer a matte finish on special orders and some LE agencies ordered their guns that way. I think I would either get an S&W letter or have some knowledgeable person check that gun over carefully.

Actually, I kind of like the "serious business" look of that matte finish. Reminds me of the old Victory model Smith M&P revolver.

The finish is a bit different, but I like it!!

Lets be honest, there are just so many 586's out there that very few of them are ever going to have collector value (unless they get locked away in a safe and never used - such a waste!).

If the world made sense (and I know it rarely does) for a gun that looks cosmetically poor but otherwise shoots well, a good refinishing job should actually help the value.

I think you've done well on that deal!

I'm sure there must be a lot of 586's out there, but my (skewed?!) view of the market over the last many years has suggested that there is way, way, WAY less 586's out there than 686's. As in... "not even close."

I wonder if anyone else has noticed the same trend?

I got it out to the range today and at 20 yards, I'm the limiting factor of how tight the groups are.

I'm actually loving the finish, not because its a work of art, but because if it weren't for this finish, I would never have been able to afford a gun of this quality. Its actually the reason I've stayed away from revolvers, I've never been able to get one that was any fun to shoot. This way I got exactly what I wanted, a quality .357 and resell value is moot as I don't intend on ever selling it. I've already ordered .375 dies for reloading.

Congrats on a great buy. A gun that shoots great and doesn't compel the owner to treat it with kid gloves AND is a bargain is a triple win. And you always have the option of stripping and refinishing it if you choose to turn it in to a safe queen. Which would of course be a very bad thing. IMO of course.

Congrats on the nice gun! You'll have years of great service out of that thing. Let me know if you ever get tired of that finish, I'd be glad to take it off your hands.

Check the stamp and make sure it is not a 686. S&W made a handful of 686's with a matte black finish back in the 90's I believe. That is what it looks like to me.

The finish was not very durable and easily scratched off. I don't think they have a lot of collector value, but usually sell for a slight premium.

A LGS was broken into and several guns were stolen, placed in a gym bag and the thieves tried to sell them out of the trunk of their car at a convience store. Cops caught them within a couple of hours and the guns were returned.

One of the guns stolen was one of the matte black 686's. The finish was in horrible condition after being in a bag full of other guns for a while. Once eveything was settled I purchased that gun pretty cheap. I had the whole thing bead blasted and it turned out pretty nice. No longer own it though. Traded for something else long ago.
