Hello, does anyone know if it is possible to acieve:
1600 - 2000 fps muzzle velocity with a 8 inch barrel.
180 grains single spire bullet.

Dan wesson mod. 40
powders avaible:
VihtaVuori and Norma

No pressure signs with 17.5 grains with Vihtavuori N110, 180 grains gas-check.

I don't think so. Guess you don't have a chrony to know what you git now? And isn't your 17.5gr load over max? You can push a 170gr speer sp to 1650 but not as accurate as if it was slowed down a 100fps .

What 180 are you looking to use the speer fpsn for the 35 Remington rifle??

A buddy back in florida has 12" 357 supermag and ended up going to 360 Wesson brass after never getting ether the higher velocity or the accuracy he wanted with the 357 max.. I was pushing the stupid limits of a 357rm in a DW 15-2 while he was loading for his supermag. This page may help some.

You may have found this site already,

Ths is one of the best sites I have found for pushing the edge in velocity .

FIL used to chrony loads in that velocity out of a 6" Dan Wesson, with 158's... I usually load 180's or 190's in that same gun, & have gotten close to 1600 out of the 6" with the 180's... so you may get there with an 8" ???

... I've not loaded 357 Max with either brand of powder you listed... in fact, been a couple years since I've loaded the Max now, so I'm not positive of the best powder... best guess right now, maybe 296, H-110, 4227 or 2400 ???

a quick internet search turned up 2 loads with 2 different VV powders in the mid 1600's for velocity ( didn't list barrel length )

From what I found, you are about .5 grain over max with VV110. Max for that powder with a 180 grain silhouette (FMJ) bullet is 17.0 grains with a listed velocity of 1672 fps. That is a Vhitavuori published load.

Highest velocity I could find right off was for VV120. 22.1 grains with a 180 silhouette bullet is listed to give 1727 fps.

Hodgdon lists a load of 21.0 grains of H110 with a 180 TMJ bullet as having a velocity of 1694 fps.

From the sound of it, you are shooting a cast lead bullet with a gas check? If that is correct, you will likely see velocities a bit higher that what you would get with FMJ bullets due to the reduced friction.

Another factor to be aware of on the Dan Wesson revolvers is the barrel/ cylinder gap. For best velocity, .002-.003" is recommended, but you'll have to clean it regularly to maintain smooth cylinder movement.

Hope this helps!

I don't know about VV powders but I can break 1600 with a 180 using 4227 in my DW40 8". Book loads will do it also. I use use the contender loads instead of the revolver loads.

This thread deserves a picture of the gun involved.
