.357 mag (158gr. SJHP) and S&W 649

Greetings!

Is this load too much of a punishment to shoot from a Snubbie? I came across some of this Magtech ammo and would like to know if this is a suitable self-defense bullet design. Thank you!

Probably. I know that 158 grain JHP .357 magnum will give me a nasty blister within 20 rounds or so out of my SP101.

125 grainers I can shoot all day. 110 grainers are softer too.

Drop the weight, increase velocity. Get same energy for lower recoil.

Out of the M649, I'd lean towards 110 grain JHPs.

Let me second those 110's. The J frame S&W revolvers are too light in weight to use with the heavy bullet. Besides the 110gr .357 Winchester is a real nice load. I also wonder about the 125 gr loading. As it is reputed to play such hob with a K frame what would it do to the J frame series?

My recommendation is the 158 grain, .38 Special +P, Lead Semi-Wadcutter Hollow Point (LSWCHP). Winchester, Remington and Federal produce these rounds.

These loads are used in the S&W M638, Bodyguard Airweight and the M66, Combat Magnum.

I can shoot at speed with good control with the +P SWCHP, but not with the .357's.
