Hi
Just picked up a New England Handi Rifle in .35 Whelen. Single shot & Scoped. Anyone own one or has another rifle in .35 Whelen. How do you like this cartridge? Any comments would be appreciated!!!!!!

I like to shoot it, but have yet to connect with any game with either my Whelens. I have a 1903 sporter and M700 in this chambering. Big bullets moving along at modest velocities what isn't to like about the Whelen?

RL-15 will be a great powder for you if you reload.

The .35 Whelen has been my go to hunting rifle for 20 years. Have killed 8 different species of big game with a 250 grain Nosler Partition at 2550 FPS, it works and works extremely well. A pile of deer both mulie and whitetail, a few black bears, a nice grizzly, a muskox, couple moose and caribou, wolf, it works well on the large stuff without being ridiculous on deer.

I have many rifles in quite a few chamberings, .270, 30-06, 300 Weatherby, 375 H&H, etc but I usually take the Whelen.

Always good results using this cartridge. I have a Remington 700 CDL (24" barrel) that will launch a 250gr bullet at 2600fps. Accurate, relatively flat shooting and hard hitting. It's also good for plinking with 158gr pistol bullets. And it will launch a 310gr Woodleigh bullet at 2400fps. Who needs a magnum? :p

Hi
Noreaster was right on with the recoil of such a small rifle. I took it out to the range yesterday & put a few rds throught it. But I was prepared thanks to you guys. Shot right on at 50 & 100yrs. Even with a cheap 4X scope it hit the mark. As with most rifles sighting in is where you feel the recoil. I've got a 870 12ga. 20 in. deer barrel shooting slugs is recoil enough. Seems like when your shooting at game you don't feel it. Wish I could afford a better rifle in .35 Whelen but for now it will do. Great shooter!!!!!

Thanks Guys
Ken

When your at the range try to let the barrel cool down some. I had a NEF 223 rifle. The groups tended to open up when I was shooting allot and the barrel heated up. Say what you want about the handi rifle, the NEF is a real nice compact hunting rifle, great for tree stands and blinds. With the 35 Whelen you probably won't need a follow up shot.

I have had several of these and currently have 2 complete rifles and a receiver. I love them. The Graybeard forums will let you love them more if you are a tinkerer. I'm trying to decide what barrel for that 3rd receiver...........

I've got a 700 Rem. classic in 35 whelen , my general purpose round is a 225gr. serria. handload . Does all and any thing I need . Some day I'll get a chance to use it on something large and jump up to a 250 + gr. bullet.
