35 Remington Gallery Loads

I have some .357 pistol bullets and some TrailBoss that I would like to combine into gallery loads so my 10-year old grandson can fire my Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. He’s already a good shot with his 22 single-shot rifle and has fired my Ruger American in .223 Remington.

I plan on using Berry’s 158 grain plated .357 pistol bullets, and I’m planning on just plinking at about 50 yards. The Hodgdon site shows I can figure the case capacity by seating a bullet and marking the case. That will give me a 100% load with TrailBoss. Reducing that load to 70% and working up to find the accurate load is the next step. Does that sound about right?

You appear to be right on the money. 70% fill with TB is a good starting point.

I use TB for plinking loads in a good number of rifles, it tends to do well in the 80-90% fill range, depending on the cartridge. 35 rem is a bit smaller than the ones I use it in, so your mileage may vary.

mgulino, thank you for your post. I just had a "why didnt I think of that!" moment . 35 cal rifle bullet .357-.358" same as 357 pistol bullet? please let me know how it goes.

First try

These are what I loaded tonight. Hornady 357 XTP with 9 - 12 grains of TrailBoss. Don’t recall COAL but loaded to the groove and gave it a healthy crimp. To the base of the bullet was 12.5 grains of TB.
If I continue this I may need an undersized mandrel for my resizing die. They were just undersized without the crimp. Will report how they shoot.

One word of caution, trailboss tends to burn erratically near 100% fill, and it does not like to be compressed. I would recommend to not exceed 90% fill for best results.

Thanks for the caution. I planned on starting with the 9 gr load (75%) and working up. That’s why I started with 12 instead of the full load at 12.5. Looking to duplicate 357 rifle performance.
