Mr. Bonar. You're fine. I'm actually kind of hesitant to ask about this as well. 
Goldy, they only carry 1inch or 30mm diameter.

How can I make sure the rings are properly aligned? I see some impressive looking pointy-ended things at Brownell's, but the only thing I have handy (other than the 24X Leupold) is a chunk of 1" dowel. As far as I can tell, they're lined up perfectly. But, hey, what do I know?
The rings are Leupold, on a Leupold 1-piece base, mounted on a Remington 700 short action.

If your rings are aligned, those two pointy things will points at each other. The easiest is to use credit card or something flat. Put it between the two pointy alignment bar. If it aligned properly, the credit card will be suspended vertically.

If you're using Redfield or other on piece base and "twist in rings" I mount the scope in the front ring. With the bolt out of the rifle look through the bore and without moving the rifle raise your eye the scope.- the "exit pupil' SHOULD BE CONTERED IN THE SCOPE OCULAR LENS. Then tighten the rear screws one at a time till they just contact the rear ring base and snug up on each side. (turn the scope in the front twist in with a proper wrench - don"t use the scope to turn that front in.
I realize this is confusing! With Weaver and good square bases mounted correctly this shouldn"t be an issue.

Mis-aligned scope rings can bend or dent the scope. I install a lot of scopes. Have had a set of alignment bars for many years: Also have the honing bar. Until recently there was little or no need for either of these tools. Then along came made in China rings and bases. Some of the Chinese made Weaver and Leupold bases and rings are so far out of alignment that they can't be corrected.
All Simmons rings and bases are made in China. It appears that Leupold and Weaver sell two kinds of rings and bases: Made in the USA (expensive) and made in China (cheap junk).
