.340 Weatherby Mag or .338 Ultra Sendero?

I am buying a new rifle for an Alaskan brown bear/Moose hunt and am having a difficult time deciding between a .338 Ultra Mag in a stainless fluted Sendero, or a Weatherby Accumark in .340 Weatherby Mag. Ballistically,I like the 340 better. I also have reservations about the newness of the .338 Ultra. I handload, so ammunition availibility is not a great concern for the Weatherby. Sourcing brass for the .338 Ultra is proving difficult (not a lot of selection).

I prefer the 54 degree bolt throw on the Accumark much more that the Sendero, and in general like the Weatherby action more. However, the Weatherby is about $500 more than the Remington.

Opinions...

I just ordered the exact Weatherby that you are talking about. I was quoted $1289.00 with the brake. I asked about the Ultra Mag. and was told the Weatherby was the better choice, Adding a brake to the Remington would add a couple of hundred to the price. I'll know next week how well it shoots. :)

So how much would a 330 Dakota cost? I don't care for Weatherby rifles, though I certainly like some of their cartridges.

For accuracy purposes, stay away from the Weatherbys. They have what is known as "freebore" in the barrel and this is not conducive to good accuracy. That is exactly the reason that there are no Weatherbys on the bench rest circut.

For hunting purposes, they'll be ok, but if you are trying to squeeze every little bit of accuracy out of your rifle, youll be happier with the Remington.

As for the 54 degree bolt throw, unless you are very practiced with shooting a bolt gun quickly for a second shot, this is really of little concern. You might shave a half second or so on your second shot, but in a hunting situation does it really matter ?

Also, given time , 338 ammo will be readily available. Walmart will have it for 20$ or so a box. Have you noticed how much Weatherby ammo costs ? You'll pay at least double. Is a couple of hundred feet per scond more gonna matter to a moose ? I dont think it'll kill em any quicker.
Save the extra 500 and buy reloading supplies wit hit. You'll be glad you did.

Go with the RUM.....

It's gonna be the heir to the .338 Lapua Mag in the US ....and it will do everything the others will do .....cheaper, ammo, rifle, and a lot more to come......
This is a rifle / cartridge combo that's time has come........
