338 Lapua vs 1" steel!!

Most magnums with the right bullet can penetrate a lot of steel. I shot a 3/4 inch piece of steel once with a 7mm magnum and it went through quite easily with a soft point bullet.
 
The recoil is not really all that bad, a little more than a 308 but not by much. The stock feels really good and the 1" rubber padding on the butt really help. I believe the round would have done a lot more damage had it been mounted to be stationary. A lot of energy was transferred when it threw the metal block back about 9 feet.
 
I would have really expected the Lapua to have done more on mild steel. I need to load some solids up for mine and drag it out and see what they will do. I have seen similar damage from a Mosin.
 
That looks heavy.. 9 feet is a long way. Do you think it would have penetrated more if there was something holding the steel in place?
 
For sure it would have done more damage if it was mounted stationary. I'll be doing some more videos showing what happens with the steel block shot with some sort of backing. I'm not sure how much the metal chunk weighs but it is pretty heavy. Thanks for checking out the video!
 
A cubic inch of steel weighs 0.278 pounds. Multiply the thickness X width X length to get cubic inches and then multiply by .278 to get weight in pounds.

Let's assume the steel is 6 inches by 10 inches, 6 X 10 X 1 = 60 cubic inches, 60 X 0.278 = 16.68 pounds.
 
Primarily for long range target shooting/coyote hunting. I haven't made any long range videos yet because I'd like to get a camera that can zoom in on the target so people can get a feel for how far I'm really shooting. A couple weeks ago I took her out to 1 mile (1760 yards) for the first time and rang the torso target twice out of 9 shots. Takes 8 seconds to hear the ding from the time you pull the trigger. Almost 3 seconds for bullet to get down range and another 5 seconds for sound to travel 1 mile. As soon as I get a new camera I'll be making some really cool long range videos.
