can anyone read the s/n 19108463 and tell the year model of a 336 Marlin and what does the EST. 1870 mean, first date Marlin made that design.

1981. First 2 numbers subtract from 100 if the rifle was made prior to 2000.

And welcome to the forum! I spent a fair amount of my childhood in SC and I still have plenty of family there. Too hot and humid for me though ;)

Thanks for the info, I was hoping it was from the good years. The metal looked so good I thought it may be from the 2000 years. I bought one new in 85 sold it and regretted it ever sense. Its like an old friend came home.

[what does the EST. 1870 mean, first date Marlin made that design. ]

AFAIK, John Marlin established (EST) his company (Marlin Firearms Co) in 1870.

The Model 336, first introduced in 1948, evolved from the Model 36 - which had a bolt like it's predecessor, the Model 1893, that looked like it was part of the receiver wall when closed (ala Model 1894).
The M-336 changed the design to an enclosed round bolt, among other improvements.

she cost 3 bills

She cost $300.00 and only has a few light marks on the wood stock. All the metal looks real good. The loading gate has little to no ware and all the bluing looks good. Down the bore looks clean as well so I guess its range time to see if its a keeper. I hope she is because the like the hammer half cock safety.

Actually that code works on MOST Marlins made from 1972 to the present. Prior to 1972 they used a letter code to indicate the year they were made. You will find certain rifles that were made in limited numbers that have their own set of SN's that don't work with that code.
