.32ACP Ammo...FMJ or HP??

Kentucky Rifle

New member
For a long time I've used hollow points in every pistol I shoot. However, I started using Fiocchi 73gr. FMJ in my NAA Guardian because they function so well in that little pistol. (They seem to operate more "slickly" than even Silvertips.) So far, I still use Hydra-Shoks in my P-32, but a friend who I respect very much has told me that in .32ACP full metal jacket ammo is the best way to go.
I was wondering just how many of the members here feel the same way about .32ACP?

Thanks,

Will

Marshall & Sanow rate the Silvertips number one. FBI notes two factors in bullet potency: penetration and diameter. Bullet diameter causes trauma. The larger wound channel results in greater blood loss. One problem with the 22 cal. is that the wound channel closes. I think FMJ is effective in large caliber bullets like the 45 ACP, but for the 32 ACP, my money is on the Silvertips.

Last year there was a test report of three different JHP brands fired from Kel-Tec P32, not sure if it was in Handguns or Combat handguns. With bare gelatin 2 of three expanded, with denim pad in front of gelatin NONE expanded. If that happens in the real world then .32 JHPs work as they should only if the BG has something less than a denim jacket.

I would like to see .32 performance data against heavy winter clothing. If JHPs work reliably with winter clothing that's good, if not then FMJ is a better bet since it gives better penetration than a JHP that fails to expand. In cooler climates cloth penetration is an important, performance against bare gelatin (or body) is not.

If only Federal would start making the EFMJ in 32ACP, and make it a +P load, that would solve a lot of probs for the mousegun crowd (myself included).

For now, I'm carrying Cor-Bon HPs and I'll switch to Fiocchi FMJs when the weather gets cooler. As soon as I get my Hornady and Fiocchi HPs, I'll do an informal penetration tests with six 32ACP HPs and post the results.

My vote is the Fiocchi. Might have to polish and reconfigure the feed ramp for hollow points. I've been thinking about switching to Glaser Safety Slugs for my PPK but I just don't have the money to shoot a hundred or so of them to see how they function.

9X19: Have you compared the overall length of the Fiocchi hollow points to the full metal jacket?

Al: Are those Cor-Bon hollow points feeding OK? Cliff at Kel-Tec told me that the Cor-Bons, being so much shorter in OAL than other hollow points, might not be so reliable.

Number 6: I keep the magazine of my .380 Colt Mustang loaded with alternating rounds of Hydra-Shoks and Glaser "Blues". It has never failed to chamber either round.

Jay and Dennis: When I ordered my back pocket holster from RJ Hedley,I also ordered one of his "pocket" magazine pouches. In it is a spare Guardian mag filled with Silvertips. I read the M&S report too, and Silvertips are what I've practiced with all along. (The Fiocchi still function more smoothly, but I carry some Silvertips because I know they work well in my Guardian also.)

Ossi: I read the same acticle. If the hollow points were to plug up with a small piece of clothing, they might not expand at all. Troubling.

Thanks guys,
Will
