327 or 5.7 x28 what is you choice

38 spl or 357 . Those rounds you can find. because lots of different company's make ammo.

other 2 are going to be hard to find and limited selection My dealer has sold 1- 327 and still has no ammo Has sold 0 5.7x28 pistols or ammo.
I think both lacking as a SD round

5.7x28 because of the rapid sucession of shots you can make with the FN 5.7
However, in reality its a glorified 22mag and not worth it if you ask me. Get a kel-tec PMR-30 if you want something like the 5.7 but its way cheaper and holds 30 rounds of 22mag! Like the previous poster said they are all lacking as self defense rounds. Get a 357 not a 327.

"glorified 22mag". Lets see if we take a 22 Mag. revolver who's back of cartridge to crown is the same as the same as a 5.7 the 5.7 has 400 to 450 fps on it. Wait a minute is that a cartridge that is designed to work as an autoloading cartridge not one that is plauged with ftl's and fte's as every 22 Mag. attemp at a autoloader handgun has cursed and caused it's own demise. Hey just wait one more minute I think they have actually designed some ammo that is made for defense and offense.

Do some reading about the 5.7x28 and the 22mag. They are ballistically similar the 5.7 still has some power on it but the round is not all its cracked up to be. Still only a 40gr. bullet.

I'd go with the 327 since there are 4 different calibers it can fire IF I had to choose 1, I'm not a big fan of either though.

.327 Federal. If you need more than 7 well-aimed shots, you: A: Should have started running earlier. B: Didn't have a chance anyway. (Don't live in fear. It rots you from the inside, out.)

The Five-Seven is over-priced, over-hyped, and the only civilian ammo available is not at its full potential (and using bullets that are insanely stupid for a home defense choice).

Either. They both poke holes in people. The 5.7x45 does have penetration characteristics more suitable for home defence.

I would just like to say that I was not picking the 5.7x28 over the 327 Mag. I was just defending it against uneducated statements. As far as a home defense weapon I would rate them both the same. I wouldnt use either one.
Number 1 choice 12 Ga. Remington Express, number 2 choice 357 Mag. or 45 ACP both from a revolver.

I'm just curious why someone would pick a .327 mag for home defense? Not that it's a bad cartridge, but ammo is pretty hard to find, and pretty expensive compared to other, more popular cartridges.

Performance is reported to be somewhere between a .38 special and a .357 mag. Why not just choose one of those?

IMO, the .327 mag has been badly mis-marketed. For self/home defense, there are just too many better cartridges out there.

For hunting medium game, I can see it's usefullness.

Daryl, Not to harp on you but what do you consider medium game? I have always included whitetails as medium game and also black bear at least in my neck of the woods anyway. I dont doubt that the 327 is not capable of cleanly taking either one but things would just have to be perfect conditions. My rule for medium game has always been, if it's a manstopper then it's a medium game stopper.

These are both niche calibers. The question isn't necessarily ballistics, the questions are "do I like the few guns offered for the cartridge" and "can I find ammo".

FWIW be aware that although the gun press has characterized the .327Mag's recoil as "mild", it's only mild in comparison with other Magnum cartridges (except of course the .32 H&R Mag, but it's not a real Magnum, it's more like .32 Long+P  ). The .327Mag is a pretty hot cartridge loaded to very high pressure. Recoil impulse is lower than .357Mag, but muzzle flash and blast reportedly aren't much better. It is no pussycat. Buying a big and heavy revolver like the Ruger GP-100 will obviously mitigate this, but that extra weight and size becomes an impediment when you're not pulling the trigger.

I agree that, for most shooters, a good mid-sized.38Spl or .357Mag revolver is a better choice. The selection of guns is much better, factory ammo availability is much better, and both the guns and ammo are cheaper.

Between the two, get the .327 AND a bottle of aspirin (for the headache you'll get from trying to find ammo.)

I've NEVER seen a 5.7 gun that's easily concealed but ammo is always at Bass Pro.
