.327 brass crooked after rezing

Once fired Federal factory ammo in .327 Magnum leave my Redding carbide sizing die crooked and only chamber the LE Wilson gage with some force. With the brass sideways in my calipers against a light source I find about 20% of this batch turn out curved. They chamber my revolver but tend to stick slightly.

Any ideas?

I know.. I asked Redding support before I bought the die kit, the answers are below. Do you still think this is the problem? And why are only about 20% affected?

REDDING:

Hi,

If you run the die to the base of the case it will size it all the way to the base. However with a revolver cartridge I only size the upper 1/2 to 1/3 of the case to eliminate the hour glass or coke bottle look to the cartridge.

Hi Chris,

will those dies resize .327 brass full length?

Thanks

REDDING:

Hi,

Yes you will need to use the 32S&W/32H&R die set #88162 and back it off.

Chris,

I just bought a Ruger .327 GP100. Will the "32 S & W Long/32 H & R Mag" dies work for .327 Federal Magnum?

Thanks

Sounds like there's some die-to-shell holder misalignment.

Take a good look at the die, the press, and the shell holder, to see if there's an obvious issue. ...Or one that you can find with simple measurements.

My guess is that the shell holder might actually be hanging on the cartridge rim and keeping the cases from seating all the way into the shell holder. Check for debris and proper fit.

I agree the shellholder is your likely problem, hopefully. I don't see how the die could be "crooked" or inserted incorrectly, and if your other calibers aren't having similar issues then I believe that will rule out misalignment between the die and ram. So that only leaves the shellholder or a serious problem with the die, which hopefully is not the case.

Sound like the shellholder also. If you do not have the right one you will have some problems.I found that when I was use the Hornady dies on what you are talking about also on 32 auto.and I found out tat some of the 32 autos did not work with one size of shellholder and because of different make of brass. So it took 2 different kind of shellholder for doing 32auto.But I use the same dies to do the follow brass 327mag,32h&R ,32 S&W Long,32 S&W , 32 Auto/ACP.the only one I change the shellholder like I said earlyer is the 32Auto.Just adjust the dies for the brass you doing and then go from there.

I understand this as, the shell holder should not be in contact with the Sizing carbide die. The die is not made for the Magnum?? Total guess on my part. If this happens after seating a bullet, there is to much crimp being applied. Case length makes the difference here. Long brass gets more crimp and may bulge. Good luck.

Since the die set is not made for the longer 327, the sizer would have to be backed away from the usual contact with the shellholder at its maximum position. Otherwise, you are crushing cases.

I use a Lyman set specifically stamped "327 Federal Magnum", as if older sets were not ideal for the longer cartridge..
