This is a very serious tool not some wacko idea.
I have used these to kill geese off a golf course with home owners all around and not one home owner has complained or called the cops regarding shots fired in the gated community in which the golf course sits. It is a tool for animal control and for suburban hunting without alerting people or the animals. In one instance I shot 6 geese in a cluster, shooting from the back to the front with out alerting or scaring off the geese.
The sound signature is much more like a "blooop" sorta like a big drain clearing, nothing gun soounding at all. The loads for deer are in fact a lead enclosed shot cup, Imagine a plastic wad with a cover glued on. It acts like a slug in flight, but upon a miss and contact with the ground or tree, the cup ruptures and the little pellets scatter. On a Deer, the effect is the same as a contact range shotgun blast.
Developed by a Minnesota man for shooting geese within city limits (with permission) These have become a very good tool for the urban hunter who has to thin herds and flocks with safety and secrecy. My first exposure was thru a friend who is a cop in a suburban police dept who was entailed the duty of killing many deer in an urban herd that had gotten out of control. In places they had as many as 50 deer per mile, destroying gardens and giving rise to a number of sick deer that people were hitting with cars. After a number of personal injuries due to car deer accidents, It was decided to utilise suppresed weapons for herd thining. This however ran afowl of a state law prohibiting the use of suppressors for hunting and people sued. These people actually wanted the state and local Gov't to capture the deer, nueter or spay them and then release them to "their family members". That was over turned but the law to stop hunting with a suppressor did get overturned so the police retained this guy who had developed the "long tom" barrels to make a slug barrel and slug load.
After shooting many deer with the outfits, other PD's animal control districts and others became interested in these barrels and it was found that just making a 870 choke tube compatible extension worked nearly as wel as the original one piece barrels. Federal Ammo has been most helpful in creating special loads that work wonderfully with the barrels
You may persist with you jokes about slapping the ducks out of the sky, but till you see one, you will not believe how quiet a unsuppressed shotgun can be.
