First, are you talking about repros or about originals. The Colt 1849 is a common gun and one of the few Colt percussions that is still priced reasonably. The Remington is less common, but also less desireable on the collector market.
If you are talking repros for shooting, they are fun and the blast and recoil is very low. In power, a good .31 pocket pistol with a heavy load is about in the category of a .32 S&W Long. In case you are thinking about defense, the little guns are minimal, even though a lot of folks departed this life after being hit by a .31 ball.
A number of years ago, I knew a man who carried a Colt .31 in Washington as a defense gun. I kept looking in the papers to see if there was any report of a body found with one or two buckshot in it, but I guess he never had to use the gun.
