308's out of a 30-06????

there are adaptors that change the chamber size

there have also been people that have accidentally loaded & fired .308 in an -06

i gather a controled feed bolt action can hold the back of the round in position for the firing pin to strike it

Generally yes, especially if the rifle has a Mauser-style claw extractor, but it is NOT a good idea.

Normally there won't be an unsafe condition, but it doesn't do anything for your brass, accuracy, or condition of the chamber.

They make inserts for certain barrels to allow it. But definately not the other way around. Only from '06 to .308.

Since the .308 has a larger diameter at the shoulder than the .30-'06 does at the same point, most of the time a .308 will not seat in a .30-'06 chamber without force being applied.

When it does seat, and is fired, about all that usually happens is that you have a .308 case with a very short neck. Nevertheless, not recommended, the case could blow at the shoulder rather than just fire forming.

(Yes, been there, done that, as an experiment, not an error.)

The result on the .308 case is a nice open case body that ends just as the brass is making that short curve into the case shoulder area.

I have one or two examples of someone else's "accident." ?? Amazing what you can find on the firing line.

Though the force-fit of the less-tapered .308 into the .30-06 chamber usually eliminates, for all practical purposes, what would otherwise be a potentially dangerous short headspace situation, the practice is NOT recommended. Long-term, you would start getting bore throat-type metal erosion in your chamber, which is NOT a good thing at all.

Point Blank,

Not to discourage questions, but a reading a reloading manual is recommended. Not the pamphlets that are handed out free at the gun store. The publications by bullet or powder mfrs that are (usually) hard cover.

Had a friend of mine that was another INSTRUCTOR that actually loaded 8 7.62's in a Garand clip and fired them in a NM M-1! I stood WAYYYYYYYYYY away but it worked. Cases came out looking like 45-70 cases with a short neck!

I'm stickin with my original answer. Just because they will go bang and the gun may or may not blow up in your face does not make a big difference in my mind. I would answer the question "Can you shoot 28 gauge shells in a 20 gauge shotgun?" the same way.

Shooting 308s out of a 30-06 without a chamber adaptor sounds like a way to land youurself a Darwin Award.

Be careful with those adapters in a repeater! They have a nasty tendency to stick to the brass and get extracted and ejected, which leads to bad things when you chamber the next round.

Possum,

You're definitely correct.

Technically it CAN be done, but as others have said, it's really not a good thing (and in fact a stupid thing) to do.

A friend's father dumped a 16-gauge shell through his 12-gauge once.

Made a funny "bloop" sound, some gas escaped from the action, and you could actually see the shot in flight because it had no velocity to speak of.

His comment was "That was interesting, but I don't think I'll be doing it again."

You got it right "Possum" and "Q-Man" too thats why I stood WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY back when it was done in my presence.
