has anybody here had any experence with this lever action, the one i'm looking at is a pre 64 hasn't been shot much in perfect condition. i also know the older gentleman that has it for sale he's the original owner. he bought it new in 63' in alaska. he's firm on 600.00 but its very nice, and i know where this guns been for 38 years, with him. thanks

the mod 88 is a very good gun, as is the Win mod 100 in .308, but I think $600.00 is high. They run around $400.00 in good shape here (WI). matt.

FWIW, the Blue Book lists the rifle in 95% condition at $400-450 in .308 and .243, and $700 in .284. The carbine runs $500 and $850. In 100%, the prices run $500-550, $850, and $700 and $1200. But 100% means new unfired, so the rifle in question can't be that. There is some collector interest, mainly because there are so many Winchester collectors.

They're accurate. A friend's .243 shot inside one inch at 100 yards, and I shot one in .308 that grouped 3/4" to 1"...

catman.

From what I've seen the pre '64s are worth the extra bucks. Our post '64 model has a cheaper stock, stamped basketweave checkering, trigger creep, etc..

The lever operated bolt action is a looong one. Even the shorter 19" carbine models are a little nose heavy for my tastes. It you carry it hands on in heavy cover that may bother you. If you sling it on the should or carry it in a scabbard then you will enjoy it.
