308 Win Lapua vs. Starline

The Lapua is currently $75.00 per 100 and of known high quality.
Starline is currently $46.00 per 100 and I'm hearing that it is very good but I haven't used it myself... yet.

Would any of you pros that have used the Starline cases care to report your impressions with regard to quality (consistency) and durability?

After the holiday dust settles I plan to buy some of the Starline stuff for comparison to the Lapua. One thing Lapua manufactures that I like is their .308 Winchester "Palma" which is the small primer pocket. Considering all of the Starline brass I have ever gotten has been exceptionally high quality I would expect the same of their .308 Winchester brass but have yet to get some to compare.

Lapua cases -- The best
Better alloy, I have heard of 9 loadings before problems
A lot of competitors only use Lapua
1/4 of the weight variation of other cases

Starline cases -- very good
Known for quality
will go about 5 loadings before problems

For competition I only use Lapua
I now anneal after every firing ( I expect 30 firings with Lapua)

If you want the best get Lapua
If your budget is tight Sarline is a good choice

Lapua small primer cases -- because the primer pocket is smaller
there is more brass in the base, making it stronger
that's good if you are going to load it real real heavy
the Palma guns have a longer barrel and a stronger action
to handle more powder
they really push the bullets hard
for a 24 inch or shorter barrel in a standard action
it's a waste, and the smaller primer some times has problems
igniting the larger volume of powder consistently
I know a couple of shooters that gave away the Palma
cases they had ( too many problems to compensate for )
and their scores went down with the Palma cases

Better question is how does the Starline compare to Peterson .308 Win brass. Peterson is much better than Lapua brass.

I had never heard of it before so I went to their site; it's priced the same as Lapua and they sell 50 round bags. I think I'll just try some. Thanks for the tip...as they say, you're never too old to learn something new.

I cannot speak on the starline brass, but I can say Lapua is the best brass I know of. I have a .338 LM: when I first got it I tried hornady brass and was sticking cases at less than 90%. I tried HSM brass and it lasted 3 reloads. Finally I broke down and bought 100 lapua cases for $2.89 each. They lasted 9 reloads (I now anneal my .338 LM brass) before it was ruined and I load them 2 grains above max published loads.

Bottom line, lapua is top notch. "The Best" is a debatable term, but no one will deny that lapua is top notch stuff.

In .308 however I use lake city brass NOT fired from a machine gun. I'm using lake city brass for 600 yard slow fire comps out of my AR10 and AR 15. The weights on lake city brass are very consistent, as is the volume. The best brass for the money imho in .308 or .223 is once fired (not from machine gun or unsupported chamber) Lake City.....but it is not better than lapua
