.308 vs .30-06

Would the .30-06 be as good as the .308 for varminting? What if reloading say using the 125gr bullet?
I have the .30-06 and looking to get a .223 for varminting.

The 30-06 should do just as well as the .308,
they shoot the same bullets. I have a 30-06 and am starting to get into varmiting also. The 110 gr. Hornady Spire Points shot better in my gun than the 125s, but every gun is different. Both of these larger bullets are kind of destructive so if you want to keep any pelts you may want to get a smaller gun like the .223.

I've used both cartridges a lot. Generally, you do more shooting when varmint-hunting than when, say, deer-hunting. So, why beat on your shoulder?

The 110-grain '06 does indeed make a mess of varmints. If you swage the 80-grain .32-20 flat-nosed bullet to .3085, and use a whole bunch of Mr. Dupont's 3031, you make an even bigger mess. :)

I have had good results with a Ruger Mk II, after I replaced the tort-liability trigger with a Timney. Three-shot groups around 5/8", generally.

I personally think .308 and 30-'06 is way too big for varmints. Use .223 for varmints, use .308 and 30-'06 for larger game.

Well, I have heard good things about the saboted 55 gr. load for the 30'06. I think it is called the Accelerator. The supposed ballistics are nearly identical to a .220 Swift.
