.308 TAP? What the heck is this stuff for?

What exactly is this Hornady .308 TAP ammo in various bullet weights, even down to 110gr, that I have been seeing lately? What advantages over conventional ball ammo does it hold, if any?

Also, is this viable in a semi auto or is it just a really expensive way to turn money into noise?

Thanks!

Really expensive way to turn money into noise. These are Hornady's "Tactical" loads that have been geared more towards law enforcement types. They are more expensive and IMHO serve no appreciable advantage over standard ammo. Unless you are a SWAT team sniper. Even then, Federal Gold Medal or good handloads are even better. Depends on what you want to shoot.

I can not speak for there TAP ammo but there 168 gr BTHP match ammo is fantastic. (#8097) same consitancy as Gold Medal (or better) and higher muzzle volicty (flater shooting) and it is the same price as the Federal stuff.

I wouldn't mind using my Hornady 110 gr. V-Max on some bad guys head. Have you seen what that does to a jack rabbit at 100 yards. I don't do that anymore because it really disturbs me. But heck, it is fine for some scum bag holding hostages. I am a true liberal now aren't I? Save the bunnies, kill the humans. disgusting.

Wow! maybe I figured how to reply without quotes. They are scum that waste our time in court and overcrowd our prisons. But why can we use expanding bullets on them and not on the commies and camel pokers. Wars...Rules..BS beertrucker-x

it seems to me like another fancy smansy way od repackaging platic tip rapid expansion varmint ammo.

thanks but if i were sniping get me soem barnes X bullets and a nice reloading setup and i will show you what a sniper round is.
works on deer like a miracle so it would work on people just as well or maybe better.

Forget about the .308 TAP how about the 300WM Tap? 175gr AMAX at 2980fps. Rapid expansion is going to be an understatement.

I've loaded the 165gr AMAX in a .308 at 2450fps and there was nothing left to find in the target berms except jacket scraps. The same powder charge behind 168gr SMK and I couldn't easily dig deep enough to find anything.

So far the 165gr AMAXs are a little more accurate then the 165gr SMKs. There is still more work to be done though.
