308 Soft Point Ammo

AR-10

Went to the range today to shoot my AR-10. I am getting low on 7.62X51, so I decided to grab the odds and ends on the shelf and shoot them up. Some Portugese, some Winchester ball, and a box of Remington 308.

The Remington ammo is 180gr. Core-Lokt Soft Point. I have it left over from a bolt action I sold. The soft lead tip is fairly blunt, so I was interested to see if it would feed in the AR. I got five rounds through it, but in the process it jamed three times. It has never failed to feed before, but this ammo is too blunt to feed properly. The last round I tried to fire stuck on the feed ramp, again, and when I took it out I noticed the bullet had been set back into the case so that it was only sticking out half as far as it should be.

I'm giving the rest of the box to my brother-in-law, who has a bolt action.

My question is this. Is there a 308 soft tip round on the market that would be likely to feed properly in a semi-automatic like the AR-10?

I'm with Gizmo on this one. Being a 308 fanatic, the BT's in all grain weights seem to feed just about where FMJ's will, in addition to being very accurate in everything I have loaded for.

FWIW, I have shot both Remington and Federal 150gr hunting ammo in my FAL. These have a conventional spire point, but a flat lead nose instead of the last couple mm that would normally be pointy copper in a FMJ. Worked fine.

Hmmm ... My Garand (in .308) even eats the short little 110 grain round nose lead bullets that I loaded up for my nephew to shoot. Must be a LOT more that's different there than I thought. I concur with the ballistic tip solution, though.

Good luck,
Saands
