.308 NATO vs. 7.62x39

They are completely different. Even the diameter of the 7.62x39 bullet is a few thousands bigger

Here is a picture of the two side by side.

The top is a 7.62x39mm

As an aside, will a .308 rifle with a 1 in 10 twist stabilize a 220 gr bullet? And if so, will a 220 gr bullet even fit in a .308 case and still have enough powder capacity to make it go over 2000 fps?

You are really pushing it to load 200s Some shoot 190s at a 1000 but 220 is out of the question. What are you trying to accomplish.

Futo Inu Yes. It can be done. E-mail me for details. I don't like giving data over the forums.

I have to admit that I do not know a great deal about the .308. But what I can say is that the 7.62X39 behaves ballistally very much like a 30/30. The diameter of the 7.62 is .311 where as a .308 is well....308 (duh).

Say, just as another aside, anybody ever heard of a conversion with something like a "Navy Block", which would include an adapter to go in the chamber of a SMLE, and a new bolt face to take the rimless 7.62X39 round? I've thought for years how nice this couls be, given how plentiful the 7.62X39 ammo is now, and that the .303 is nominally a .311 bore.

Will you, too, be one who stands in the gap?

Yes, the soviet 30's are .311 same as brit if you want to convert a SMLE to 7.62x54R there is a write up on JPFO's web sight (I dont know why you would want to but you can)
