I am new here and heard about the firing line from a friend.I have a savage model 99a 308 leaver action a great gun. I have been thinking about selling it and buying a 243 simple reason being is that my son and wife both have a 243 and i thought it would be nice to have just one kind of ammo around. My question is what is the gun worth if i decieded to sell it my buddy has shot it and really likes it.I just want to get what it is actually worth.any help would be greatly appreciated.THANKS AND GOD BLESS!

Hi. Each rifle will shoot the same ammo differently. So sharing ammo doesn't really work well. Makes a difference if you're reloading though. I'd be thinking different brands of brass to make knowing what load goes with which rifle.
Anyway, 99's have a cult following. The value will depend on the condition and if you're selling it scoped or not. One of 'em recently sold(dealer listing) on GunsAmerica for $799. A guy on 24hourcampfire asked $425 for his.
If you're thinking about a 99 in .243, you'll be paying that kind of money, if you can find one, too. Your buddy have a .243 he might think about trading?

I appreciate the information i kinda hate to get rid of it but i was thinking of maybe getting a single shot 243 and getting a 22-250 barrel to go with it but dont need to deer rifles and have been shooting my wifes gun quite a bit here lately and have got to really like it.I have been of work with knee surgey and kinda got trading fever i guess lol. Thanks again for the information.GOD BLESS.

Second line!!!

Let me know what you want for it ... we might be able to work something out. ;)

If it were me, I'd get a Thompson Center Encore rifle. You can get all kinds of barrels for them, and they are really accurate.

Somewhere there's a guy with a 99 in .243 that wants one in .308.

You also might consider re-barreling and re-chambering your .308 into .243. The .308 is the parent round of the .243 and iirc it won't be too difficult of a job. That option might be less expensive as well.

As was already said a good condition Savage 99 starts at about $450 and goes up from there.

I'm not enamored of having all the families rifles chambered in the same round. I don't see it saving much if any money and I tend to doubt it will increase efficiency very much.

To riverwalker76 Here is a picture of the gun .It has a bsa contender scope and a leather sling i want $550.00 for it

The 243 is a good cartridge for most game and for the sake of having one type of ammo not a bad idea. The .308 is also an excellent cartridge the Savage 99 is now an antique or classic valued by collectors more than shooters. Personally I would keep the 308 Savage 99 and get the 243 to hunt with.
I just love my model 99 but I also collect lever guns.
Mace

Im not much of a collecter other than my wife been married for 30 yrs and she couldnt run me off with a billy club. I just get a hankern every now and then to do a little tradin.
