Hey guys i ordered a x bolt 308 the other day and now its time for me to pick out ammo for it. The gun will be used for hunting mainly deer and bear. the bear will be over bait. What im looking for is a good factory round. i know im going to have to shoot them to see what it likes better but im looking for some where to start. This is my first big caliber rifle.

My favorite off-the-shelf ammo is Federal Fusion. You get a great bullet at a price that is only a little bit above the cheap stuff.

Hornady has some really great ammo. My wife shoots her X-bolt .308 to less than an inch at 100 yards using the 165gr BTSP. I shoot the SST in 150 or 165gr in my Tikka T3 Lite with the same results. Federal Fusion is a good alternative. It's plenty accurate for hunting. Try as amny types of ammo as you can get cheaply. Hope one of the cheap ones work for you. Saves money that way. ;)

Cheaper...

Hunter 2009--Cheaper than the Federal Fusion is the Federal hunting ammo in the blue box. Comes with an "ordinary" bullet, and it worked great the last couple of times I was in your situation.

But I agree with the other posters, unfortunately, there is NO way for us to tell you what your rifle will prefer for best performance, and the only way for you to find that out is to try a multitude of brands of ammo.

You might luck out and find that your rifle works really well with something cheap.

Seems to me like a very good reason to look into reloading as an alternative to paying store prices for centerfire rifle ammo. Unless you are the type of shooter who uses up a box of 20 rounds every 4 years, even the cheap stuff runs into money.
