.308 Enfield Problem

I took my new Navy Arms .308 Jungle Carbine to the range today and have a question.I was shooting Portuguese milsurp 147gr.fmj`s.Accuracy was good with 1.5" groups at 50 yards.(it was cold and snowy so I didn`t venture out any farther)Here`s the problem.Extraction.I had to lightly tap on the bolt handle with a plastic mallet to extract the fired cases. The cases were noticably swelled starting .1"above where they neck out above the base and there was some roughness in the shoulder area.I didn`t have any other loads with me so I don`t know wether to be suspicious of the chamber dimensions or blame the ammo.I was only able to extract 2 rounds out of 20 fired without using the mallet.Any thoughts, suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated.

FMJ,
My twelve year old son purchased the standard issue Ishapore for his first large caliber rifle. It placed three rounds of U.S. milsurp into a half inch circle at 50 yards with the issue sights. Convinced we had a shooter he went and purchased a cheekpad and scope to get serious. After getting everything installed we experienced several extraction problems with some Argentinian milsurp to the point of having to kick the bolt open with a boot heel. Same thing occured with my wife's sweet little Savage 99A. Groupings also tripled in size with both rifles. Went back to other milsurp and commercial loads and no malfunctions whatsoever(no wonder the Argies placed second in that Falklands fracas). My advice is don't get concerned until you try a variety of loads. Hope this helps and good luck.

God bless America,

Thanks,Paladin.Thats kinda what I was thinking. The thing was shooting pretty good.I`m just a bit po`ed that I still have 180 rounds of the Portuguese ammo left.Live and learn,I guess.

Sounds like excessive pressure. I had a similar experience with Argentine 308 in an Israeli Mauser, discarded the lot.

I have shot several hundred rounds of Argie surplus 7.62 NATO through my DSArms imported Argie FAL and my Ishapore. Never had a problem. I also have just purchased the Portugese surplus. No problems in the several dozen rounds I have shot.

CAVIM and Chilean surplus is another issue altogether. ;( Never going there again.

The one problem that I have with my Ishapore is the the last two rounds (12 rounds in the mag for .308) don't strip off very well. I guess I need a new mag/spring.

I get pretty good accuracy from my Ish, and the open sights. My buddy has a .303 Enfield with the rear mounted peep sight. That sucker is a shooter. My rear open sight can wobble after each shot, requiring me to make sure it is down and resting in place.

The stripper-clip fed Ish Enfield along with the slick action and the lously sights makes me consider converting to a scout set up. I probably won't, but...

What I wonder sometimes...

how people expect to get good ammo and buy it from a country that has never been in a war, or at least never a victor. India, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Malaysia ... ?

Just idle curiousity.

I guess you wouldn't buy Vietnam era US 5.56 NATO but would be real happy to purchase Afghani .303 British <g>.

I will buy surplus because I can bust rocks in the desert with the FAL. I will reload .308 for hunting and target shooting with the Savage.

Gimme cheap, as long as it functions to my somewhat lowered expectations. That's why I bought the $70 Ishpore, after all.

I had the exact same problem with my Jungle Carbine. The guys over in gunsmithing advised me to take a dowel rod with fine emory cloth to the chamber. I am embarrassed to say that I don't know if it worked or not. I have'nt been to the rifle range in a looooong time. Please let me know how yours turns out with different ammo. I was using Federal Classic .308 when I shot mine.

BigG: Study some military history and you will find that the Indians have a long and often successful career in fighting.

The Brits wre quite happy to use Indian troops against Germans in North Africa.

My .303 Enfield had a similar problem and it turned out to be headspace, or rather an excess of it. Check the fired cases for bulging or other signs.

I am the buddy with the .303 (No 4, MkI). Tried mounting a scope using the mount that replaces the rear sight. My scope ran out of up elevation and it still shot 6" low at 100 yards. Back to the original site and I bust rocks a 400 yards 80% of the time.

I keep telling Rick that Ishapore is the Indian pronunciation of "It Shoots Poor", but he doesn't believe me.... :)

A special request

Can we please have TimW banned from the forum? He will cause no end of trouble, trust me. Making fun of people's budget southwest asian surplus rifles is only the beginning. When he rebarrels his LH-Savage .30-06 to .375 Chicken Hawk he will look down his nose on anything smaller than .338.
