.308 AR?

I know this is not a new question but I gotta ask because I can't quiet find the info I am looking for. I am a serviceman in Afghanistan right now but will be returning to the states in a few months. I want to buy an AR style rifle in .308/7.62. I LOVE the .30 cal bullet and that's why I want one. But I don't know what to get.

I have been looking at the new sp901 and like it but the big plus that everyone is talking about with the gun is that you can put a 5.56 upper and rock and roll with it. I don't care about that at all, if I want a 5.56 I will just buy one.

I will be using it as a ranch gun, hunting, and taking over the planet of Mars if ever given the opportunity. LOL. Oh come on that was a little funny.

What would you guys suggest? I want to put a light, bipod, scope, and a red dot on it, although I don't know if I want the scope and red dot on at the same time like with a cant mount or something. Accessories I can worry about later but as for the rifle I want to keep the cost under $2,500 without accessories.

First off - Thank you for your service.

Now on to your question...

While I know that there are some who will look down on DPMS they DO make a very high quality .308/7.62NATO AR rifle. They do so in a few different variations too depending on what you are wanting out of the rifle.

I have a version with a floated 24" SS bull barrel, flat top upper and flat/railed gas block. No forward assist or dust cover. I've got it sighted in at 300yds and shooting from a bench, supported by sandbags, I can shoot way under MOA with the rifle. The rifle itself is much more accurate than I am capable of shooting.

These rifles and other variations can be found from $800 to $1000. The nice thing about them is that while they don't accept standard M14 mags they DO accept mags from Magpul... and I do love my Magpul mags! If your budget is $2500 getting one of these rifles leaves you a lot of money for other toys.

I will take a look at them. Ni defiantly want a shorter carbine type. I was thinking around the 16" range as I will not be shooting over 300 yards.

Take it for what you will, when I went looking for a .308 AR I went with Rock River LAR-8 A4 full-length.

The scope I went with is a Leupold VX-3 1.5-5X20mm illuminated circle dot reticle.

I find this scope combines both the ability for 1.5 magnification for up-close use and 5 power for more distant needs and the lighted circle-dot reticle very useful in low-light conditions.

As I have considered ACOGS and/or magnifiers for red dot sights, neither afforded the flexibility in such a compact package as the Leupold.

I plan to get a 7.62 AR in the next year. Currently looking at the LMT MWS, Larue OBR or Predatar and the Knights SR-25. In that order.

I will be using it as a ranch gun, hunting, and taking over the planet of Mars if ever given the opportunity. LOL. Oh come on that was a little funny.

The .308 AR platform is heavy as a stripped rifle with a 16" barrel. You start adding accessories it can get to 12-14lbs before you know it.

For your primary use of the rifle I would look at a 16" or 18" rifle. The new CMMG .308 AR is available in 16" and 18".

The ArmaLite AR10B or AR10A (M14 mags or Pmags-SR-25). The LMT MWS would also be a good choice.

I would go with the new ArmaLite AR-10A in a 16" carbine, Pmags, life time warranty and about $1500.

My Noveske N6 is close to 10lbs in battle sights, the PRS doesn't help.

Add a few accessories and it's in need of wheels.

I've had my DPMS LR 308B for over 5 years and over 1500 rds downrange. During that time, it has been totally reliable, no failures of any kind. Accuracy is moa with any decent ammo and sub moa with my handloads.
It has an 18" cryo bull barrel JP trigger & (now) Magpul PRS stock & MOE hand grip. Weight is around 12 lbs with a 4 ~ 16x 50mm scope & Harris bipod. Well worth its net cost of about $1900.00
When you order your rifle no matter who's you decide upon, some things to consider.
1, Order a trigger upgrade. The standard AR triggers are horrible
2, A fwd assist is not needed on a 308 rifle, just a waste of your $.
3, Make certain that its magazines are readily available and inexpensive. Some are difficult to find, not reliable and EXPENSIVE.
4, Magpul accessories are very nice, especially if you can order them as options with your new rifle.

Have fun with your new toy!
