.308 ammunition

aimsurplus.com has some Hirtenberger that is cheap and very good. DO NOT get the malayasian stuff, I have discovered that
3/4 my accuracy problems at 100 yd+ can be attributed to it.
While we are on the subject, anybody got a good website for cheap decent 30 carbine and 9mm?

Pariah, if you're looking for 9mm but don't want to reload get some of the Wolf. It's great stuff. I shot a 1 1/2" 5 shot group at 25 yards with it. It's not very dirty either as some russian ammo can be. I love the stuff. Pick some up and try it. I believe 1000 rnds is only about $99 and you can't go wrong with that price.

I second the AIM Surplus suggestion. They have very good prices and that Hirtenberger .308 is very good.

And to answer your question, no I wouldn't use match grade ammo to sight in and get on paper. After on paper at 100 then use the match grade stuff. Your POI will probably be different from the cheaper stuff but you can adjust with on well fired round.

First shoot a couple of rounds at 25 yards correcting after each one and once you are on there then you should be with in 3 inches at 100 yards with a .308. That's how I sight in when using a new scope.

It all depends ... I have found that good mil-surp 7.62x51, like Hirtenberger, will shoot about 8" higher than good commercial .308 like Winchester Supreme. If you plan on shooting mil-surp or handloads that mimic its ballistics, then sighting in with Hirtenberger will be the way to go. www.aimsurplus.com has pretty good prices on .308 surplus.

The malayasian stuff also has about a dud per 50 rounds.... Cheap as dirt though! I bout 500 rounds a ways back for my fal, it's the best for rapid fire I've yet to find....

British surplus is good too, bit more expensive though.(Reloadable too)

AimSurplus' shipping prices are fair ... a case of .308 is not shipped for free, though, so expect to pay, IIRC, in the neighborhood of $25 to $30 ...

Ocabj. Sight it in with what you plan to use for serious purposes.

Have some of that for those serious purposes.

You can use cheap stuff for practise.

I reload all mine. Can't help you with low prices.

Some seem to misunderstand what I was telling Ocabj. He asked what to use for "inital sighting" in. I might have misunderstood him but I thought he meant what to use to get on paper when initially mounting a scope. If that was the case then I stand by what I said when I told him to use cheap ammo. There's no reason to use match grade ammo to get your rifle on paper. If he meant what to sight in with after you get your zero with match grade ammo then of course you should only use what you are zeroed in for and if you change lots or ammo type then you rezero.

if you are planning to use cheap mil surplus ammo most of the time,
I heard that radway green from Britain is good, thou a little low pressure side,
heard portugese FNM is pretty good too,

I like the Hirtenberger .308 too. It is also reloadable and looks like good brass. I haven't seen anything crappy come out of Austria.(Steyr, Glock, etc.)

I have! Well ... it didn't come out of Austria, but I'm pretty sure that it was made there ... I ran into a real crappy attitude in a border crossing guard there a couple of years ago
