.308 ammunition

I picked up a couple boxes of .308 on sale. HERTER'S (S&B) soft point marked "150 gr SPCE". The designation is soft point cutting edge. I opened up a box and, SURPRISE! What the heck is this? The bullet has a step about 1/2 inch back from the point. Kind of like it started out as a .270 and they changed their mind to .308. Never saw anything like it. Anybody ever use this stuff? I have used S&B over the years and it is pretty good ammunition, but this is just plain weird.

It's supposed to create a stop to limit how far back the nose can peel open during expansion; a method for retaining more bullet weight without adding the expense of bonding the core to the bullet during manufacturing. It probably cuts nice clean holes in paper like a SWC. The shoulder can't possibly help the BC, though. Description here.

I used this type ammo in a 7x57 in the past. What I found with that specific ammo was poor expansion at longer ranges.

Probably would be less of an issue with 150 grain .308. The 7x57 exhibited expansion performance making it most suitable for something like elk, moose, or bear rather than deer.
