.308 ammo question.

I'm a newbie to the caliber. Can a person still legally purchase surplus APand tracer rounds in .7.62X51? I see these variants in 5.56 at gunshows all the time, why not 7.62 X 51? Just curious.

Tracer, SFAIK is plenty legal.

Now. Sit down. Get a firm grip on unreality: Remember those non-existent "Cop Killer" bullets? So the feds passed a law saying you can't have 'em? Hokay. With such things as the Contender having a barrel for a .308, ATF jumped up and began shrieking that this meant that the .308 was a pistol round, and AP is bad, bad, bad because it's an evil cop-killer bullet.

Which is a long-winded way of saying that AP in any rifle cartridge but the .308.

Your federal government is protecting you as efficiently as it did at the WTC.

Don't forget

Check your state laws. Here in California they don't let us have tracer ammo. Too much fun.

Regards.

So if you see .308 ammo at a gun show that is labeled M61, don't buy it. M61 is AP ammo. So don't buy it. I saw some once at a gun show. I didn't buy it. I didn't. I don't think I did. Sheesh, now I don't recall if I have M61 or not. I have no recollection of buying it.

Try a search for M61

Art, a nit.

Contenders were never made in .308 (Win) - bolt thrust problems. Encore - yes.

Maybe you're thinkin' about that "7.62X39" fiasco ... I think that's what started it off re "pistol AP crap."

Far as "stupid Guv tricks," '68 brought in lots of "fun" ways for the guv to play. At 15, I could buy .30-06, etc. (goes in a rifle), shotgun shells, but not .22LR 'cause those would go in a handgun ... had to be at least 21 for that.

Can't hurt anybody with a rifle I guess ....

I used to do a lot of junkyard shooting (in rural Ohio that means backyard shooting) with an SKS and AK. I've seen what "non AP" rounds do to cars and appliances. I can just imagine how the 7.62X51 compares. To think that these laws were passed to make law enforcement safer is beyond comprehension. Politics and logic simply don't mix.

This is sort of tricky, but I believe these are the rules. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. A manufacturer can only sell complete rounds to LE, and cannot sell new bullets to civies, BUT, if the gov sells the rounds as surplus, companies can pull the bullets and sell them as components. Most .30 cal AP you see will be pulled form .30-06, so the bullet is probably slightly longer than optimal, but I believe these were pulled from .308.

Good luck on finding some loaded M61. Gee Whiz, you can get AP in just about everything but .308

Buy the componant and roll your own..you can buy 163 grain 30 cal. AP bullets and load them into your own brass, etc.
You can even order online ;)
