.308 AKs

The latest Federal Arms catalog has Russian-made AKs for sale. They have nice black synthetic furniture. THere's a 7.62x39mm version that takes standard AK magazines, and a .308 version that takes 8 round magazines. They have either 16" or 20" barrel lengths.

Also in the .308 AK department is the VEPR II and the Super VEPR from Robinson Armament. Again, these take 10 round magazines.

Question: Would it be too terribly complicated, mechanically, to modify one of these to take FAL magazines? This is merely a point of curiosity. The cost of having this operation done to a .308 AK would easily put the total cost right up there with a DS Arms Austrian FAL, so it's just a point of curiosity.

UPDATE: Just checked Robinson Armaments website. Kreb's Custom Guns, INC, working with RobArm, will convert your .308 VEPR to accept M14 magazines for $100. Seeing as how a GI 20 round M14 magazine costs the same as a standard 10-round VEPR magazine, that's a good deal. The STG-58A parts gun FAL from DS Arms, the best parts gun on the Market, runs for about $995.00, MSRP (Federal Arms has 'em for $795.00), and all of the other .308 semiauto "battle rifles", like the M1A, AR-10, new production FAL, HK 91, and so on, are about $1,000.00 and up. MSRP for a lot of these guns approaches $1,500.00. So, yeah, this looks like a good deal to me, a well-made .308AK that takes M14 magazines? Grand total cost, about seven hundred dollars.

Nightcrawler,

Be careful about modifying FAL mags. I think the ATF regs require that modified mags must still work in the original firearm they were designed for. I think a better choice would be to modify .308 Galil mags rather than FAL mags.

Just my $0.02 worth...

Modifying

You misunderstood; modifying each magazine to work in the gun would be expensive, especially if you like to stock up on magazines. I propose instead that you modify a .308 AK to accept Metric or Inch pattern FAL magazines. I believe that there'd be less modification necessary than if you were altering the magazine well and release system to accept M14 magazines, because like the Kalashnikov line, the FAL utilizes snap-in magazines, whereas the M14 and M16 use push-in types.

Just as a question, do you know where one can get .308 Galil magazines? I've seen them very rarely.

Emailed and was responded to by both Tromix and Arizona Response Systems. Tromix said he could do it, but they're too backlogged with projects to accept new ones. ARS said they'd have to have the weapon in front of them, then decide.

*frustration*

Oh, well, a VEPR II would still be cool, and as a last resort, I could have it converted to M14 magazines from Kreb's Custom, but I'd rather it use metric-pattern FAL magazines.

Does anybody know of any other gunsmiths that could or might do a conversion? I need email addresses and/or phone numbers, please.

if they could of made fal mags work they would of done it

a 10 round mag is more than a 7 round garand clip & that rifle won WWII...

i checked the CDNN price in SGN

vepr 308s are $444!
